Abu Dhabi imposes 120 km/h minimum speed limit on major highways

Motorists will be fined the equivalent of A$168 if they are not going fast enough on 62 kilometers of highway in the United Arab Emirates.

A posted minimum speed limit of 120 km/h applies to both left-hand lanes of the four-lane highway linking the emirate of Abu Dhabi to Dubai. The maximum speed limit on all four lanes is 140 km/h. However, heavy vehicles must remain in the rightmost lane and can only travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

“The imposition of the minimum speed limit is aimed at improving road safety. It will urge slow-moving vehicles to use appropriate lanes,” said General Al Muhairi, chief of Abu Dhabi Police.

Abu Dhabi Police conducted an online survey ahead of the introduction of the minimum speed limit and found that 78% of some 3,400 respondents supported the new law.
