Abu Dhabi International Airport celebrates its 40th anniversary

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi Airport marks the 40th anniversary of the official opening of Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) on Sunday, celebrating its contribution to the significant improvement of Abu Dhabi as an aviation, trade and tourism center.

“For 40 years, Abu Dhabi International Airport has connected the world to Abu Dhabi and has promoted the emirate as a major destination for tourism, trade and commerce. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had the vision to build an airport because With his vision, Abu Dhabi Airport has established a tradition of cooperation, innovation and service. This is a legacy that will continue to develop in the next 40 years because it supports the continued social and economic development of Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” Abu Dhabi Said Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tanun Al Nahyan, chairman of Dhabi Airport.

The airport was first proposed in 1974 in response to the government’s plan to modernize the newly established UAE. The construction of the airport began in 1979, and the new Abu Dhabi International Airport was officially opened on January 2, 1982. There is a circular satellite terminal with a single connection to a semicircular terminal.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the terminal was expanded to cope with the increase in passenger numbers. Etihad became a national airline and a local airline in 2003, which was a catalyst for rapid growth. It served as a catalyst for Terminal 2 in September 2005, the second runway in 2008, and 3 in January 2009. The opening of Terminal No. 2 paved the way and increased the airport’s capacity by 12 million passengers per year.

The airport also created a number of firsts. In 2014, AUH introduced the first U.S. border pre-clearance facility in the Middle East to help process passengers on direct flights entering the U.S. before boarding.

In addition, AUH launched the region’s first smart travel system in 2016 to simplify passenger handling and improve customer experience. At the beginning of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, AUH was the first to introduce non-contact doors and non-contact elevators to complement its extensive health and safety measures.

“Abu Dhabi International has a proud history of providing world-class infrastructure and first-class services, and at the same time serving as a 40-year growth catalyst in the 50-year achievements of the country we are proud of,” Abu Dhabi Airport Chief Executive Shareef Al Hashmi pointed out. “With the recovery of consumer confidence and the gradual recovery of passenger flow, we will continue to explore new technologies, products and operating methods to promote sustainable development and create an industry-leading airport experience. Although we are proud of our past achievements, but We are equally excited about a bright future.”
