Abu Dhabi is emerging as a ‘must visit’ superyacht destination, experts say

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – With 5,325 superyachts currently registered on the world’s waterways, divided between 4,492 motor yachts and 833 sailing yachts, Abu Dhabi is emerging as a major destination for the global superyacht industry.

According to a report titled ‘A new winter oasis of luxury at sea – Abu Dhabi seeks to become a global superyacht destination’ published by AD Maritime, the custodian of the emirate’s waterways and AD Ports Group’s Part of Abu Dhabi Maritime (AD Maritime) published. A number of important milestones have been achieved that superyacht owners consider when choosing a destination. The white paper was launched from 28 September to 1 October 2022 at the Monaco Yacht Show, the annual international trade show dedicated to the world of superyachts.

Following extensive consultation with industry experts, the report identified four key criteria that give Abu Dhabi a significant comparative advantage, including: favourable seasonal weather and sea conditions; advanced maritime infrastructure and related services; established laws and regulatory environment; and world-class attractions that incorporate social, cultural and entertainment elements.

Superyachts are the pinnacle of maritime leisure craftsmanship and luxury lifestyle, with vessels over 30 meters in length mainly distributed in less than a dozen countries around the world. While designs may vary in size and flare, superyachts all tend to have similar characteristics: wealthy owners, charter companies, maintenance-intensive operational requirements, and a strong need for picturesque cruising opportunities.

With more than 150 new superyachts due to be completed in 2022 and a total fleet value of more than 4 billion euros, Abu Dhabi’s entry into this exclusive sector of the industry could bring significant economic benefits to the emirate and the nation.

Captain Ammar Al Shaiba, Acting Chief Executive Officer, AD Ports Group Maritime ClusterSay: “We have written this white paper to showcase the significant progress Abu Dhabi has made in recent years in developing its unique offering for superyacht owners and to identify areas where more work is still needed to realise our vision. Findings Shows that the UAE is emerging as the premier destination for the superyacht elite, with a wide range of services, attractions and climate advantages. Multiple agencies and organisations are working together under the guidance of our wise leadership to make this happen.”

Captain Saif Al Mheiri, Managing Director of AD Ports Group Abu Dhabi MaritimeSay: “The superyacht industry is the cornerstone of the UAE’s wider maritime leisure economy, leveraging our country’s strategic location, stunning coastline, favourable seasonal weather, advanced infrastructure and friendly regulatory environment to welcome leading industries from around the world Participants and tourists come to our shores.

“As our latest research shows, our team at AD Maritime is working closely with our wider maritime community to develop Abu Dhabi’s value proposition and we look forward to welcoming the global yachting community to our shores and unleashing our The full potential of the emirate offers.”

Based on a series of qualitative interviews with international experts conducted in 2021 and 2022, the report examines what attracts shipowners to venture beyond traditional destinations such as Marbella, Capri, St Tropez, Antibes and Mediterranean ports such as Monaco and Caribbean ports such as Antigua, Saint Lucia, the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

Experts interviewed said the increase in superyacht ownership over the past decade, supported by the changing nationalities of shipowners, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, encouraged individuals and companies to go beyond these typical destinations. In addition, Abu Dhabi’s geo-strategic location coupled with its natural abundance of pristine waterways and islands has helped increase its visibility among these new owners.

Sea conditions in the Arabian Gulf, with year-round calm and calm waters, combined with mild off-season temperatures, mean boats do not need to be picked up from the water and stored at an expense, adding to Abu Dhabi’s appeal.

The report also highlights Abu Dhabi’s wide range of leisure and recreational offerings for the global superyacht community, including pristine coastal desert beauty featuring marine reserves and a series of scenic islands, beaches and anchorages. The emirate is also home to many world-class annual sporting events including the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, Mubadala Tennis Championships and Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, as well as renowned cultural destinations including the Louvre Abu Dhabi , Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim and more.

According to the white paper, one of the areas where the UAE has made significant progress is the development of a legal and regulatory framework to support superyacht owners and their crews, many of whom are not full-time residents of the country. The recently released comprehensive and fully digitized safety map of all waterways in the UAE, identifying anchorage areas, motorized and non-motorized vessel areas, and speed limits, is considered a key improvement. Maps developed by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and AD Maritime are available on the latter’s digital portal, www.admaritime.aeand through Al Nalia, the dedicated interactive navigation app on the App Store and Google Play.

In addition, Abu Dhabi has made significant progress in developing advanced maritime infrastructure and related services for superyachts. There are currently around 100 superyacht refit shops around the world, and Abu Dhabi offers many market-leading facilities in the region. Additionally, the emirate has two full-service superyacht marinas accommodating yachts of all sizes, backed by a full range of first-class accommodation, services and facilities.

One superyacht owner, who chose to remain anonymous for the report, concluded: “Abu Dhabi is fast becoming a must-visit superyacht destination. It’s a place we want to spend more time. It already meets many conditions, The authorities have always made things faster, easier and better for the owners and our captains to choose to spend their time there.”
