Abu Dhabi is poised to become one of the most advanced smart cities in the world, with a sustainable mobility plan, rich transport infrastructure and deployment of transformative technologies, according to a top international researcher.
Professor Jalel Ben Othman, an expert in intelligent transport management, noted that Abu Dhabi has developed a Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) to provide a sustainable transport system that supports the capital’s economic, social and cultural, as well as environmental goals.
Osman, professor at Université Paris-Saclay/CentraleSupelec, said: “Our effort is to use all relevant components within Abu Dhabi such as cars, motorcycles, roads, highways and information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance mobility in the capital. According to the STMP, Othman, through his projects under the Aspire program, will leverage ICT to monitor traffic, propose solutions and exchange information in a seamless manner – directly adding value to the city’s traffic landscape.
“While the UAE is located in a dry and hot region, we believe that alternative methods of moving around the city can be used, such as walking, riding a motorbike and cycling at certain times of day or/and on certain days of the year. According to the 2021 TomTom Traffic Index, Abu Dhabi tops the list of capital cities with the least traffic congestion. Osman said local transport authorities have been ensuring the smooth flow of traffic within the city to prevent unnecessary traffic congestion.
“The city’s existing transport infrastructure is highly developed, thanks to the strategic construction of a vast network of highways, as well as wide roads running through the city center. Autonomous taxis, buses and trams are currently serving residents and tourists on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is also a “bicycle city”.
Dr. Johnson pointed out that the adoption of driverless technology in the UAE transport ecosystem is one of the top smart mobility solutions, not only in the country but in the world.
“The Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 prioritizes safe, sustainable, efficient, reliable and seamless mobility for residents. To achieve this, autonomy of use, connected ecosystems, electrification, mobility-as-a-service and micromobility services are introduced smart solutions. Othman’s research focuses on intelligent traffic management.
“By working with colleagues at Zayed University, I hope to contribute to the transformation of Abu Dhabi’s transport infrastructure through optimized and efficient road management. We will work with artificial intelligence, smart networks, connected and Technological collaborations such as flying vehicles have a major impact on reducing road congestion, energy and sustainability.By developing new algorithms for smartphones, we aim to enhance mobility planning in the capital and reduce carbon emissions to ensure safer, greener, A more sustainable environment.”
According to Othman, identifying current mobility trends is critical to developing theoretical mobility models that can be customized to meet specific use cases in different parts of the city. Another aspect to consider is the reduction of gas emissions under the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Strategy initiative.
“We want to further support this effort by increasing the use of alternative energy sources such as electricity or hydrogen. We need to reduce the number of vehicles – especially motorcycles on the road for home deliveries – and replace them with robots and/or unmanned aerial vehicles. Most importantly, we need to promote education and awareness of sustainable transport,” Osman added.
