Abu Dhabi is well positioned to lead the UAE’s long-term sustainable development

The promise is supported Abu Dhabi Environmental Vision 2030, a long-term plan that plays a key role in the emirate’s continued transformation and good prospects. This was developed in close coordination with the Executive Council General Secretariat and the Economic Development Department.

The vision emphasizes the integration between the three pillars of sustainability – environmental, economic and social. It also inspires the conservation and enhancement of natural heritage.

Resources are being used more efficiently than ever, minimizing the impact of climate change, driving reductions in air and noise pollution, conserving water resources and contributing to a better quality of life for all.

In support of the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) Increasing investment in best-in-class low-carbon innovation. These projects focus on solar energy and reverse osmosis desalination technologies that will ultimately lead to a 50% reduction in our fleet’s carbon emissions by 2025.

Ewec’s investment is in line with the company’s strategic goal of generating more than 50% of Abu Dhabi’s energy needs from renewable and clean sources by 2030.

We are working to diversify and grow our portfolio of renewable and clean energy projects, including three leading solar power plants. Noor Abu Dhabi, with a capacity of approximately 1.2 GW, started commercial operations in 2019; Al Dhafra Solar PV, currently under construction, will be the new world’s largest single-site solar power plant with a capacity of 2 GW; And the Al Ajban Solar PV, which is under development, will be similar in size to the Al Dhafra Solar PV.

This will give Abu Dhabi the three largest single sites solar power plant in the world.

Ewec has also significantly increased investment in low-carbon-intensive reverse osmosis (RO) technology as part of our strategic plan to decouple water and electricity production. Our projects based on this technology will support Abu Dhabi and the UAE in achieving their sustainability and carbon neutrality goals.

In addition, we have partnered with the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) on a New Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Plantto support Circular economy in the UAE.

The plant is one of the largest WtE facilities in the region, with an expected capacity to process 900,000 tonnes of waste and power up to 52,500 homes annually. The plant will divert 75% of waste from landfill, reducing carbon emissions by 1.1 million tons.

The WtE project supports sustainable development efforts at the national level. Converting waste to energy can greatly reduce waste in landfills, which in turn can help combat climate change by curbing greenhouse gas emissions. While recycling excess waste, valuable resources are also recovered for reuse.

With these results in mind, our WtE plant represents a win-win solution for the environment, population and the UAE as a whole – cementing Abu Dhabi’s sustainability leadership at the regional and international levels.

Abu Dhabi is moving towards its transition goals, preparing for future generations as envisioned by the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative.
