environmental officer Abu Dhabi A new campaign has been launched to educate the public on the need to protect the planet.
e-Green platform, powered by Abu Dhabi Environment Agencywhich is free to use, will initially be open to private and public school students in the country.
The agency said it was the first collaborative e-learning tool dedicated to the Middle East’s environmental sector.
It aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the environment and promote conservation.
In the first phase, e-Green has been rolled out for schools and will be available for public use in 2023.
“e-Green is a cutting-edge e-learning platform that aims to be the preeminent reference for e-learning in the global environment,” said Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD.
“At this stage, we are targeting schools and, in the future, leading environmental agencies, universities and international business organisations will be able to develop and upload their own content to the platform according to the EAD guidelines.
“The environment is a leading global topic and generations to come have mastered it, and through tools like e-Green, they will be able to access scientific and well-researched information to enhance their knowledge.”
Khansa Al Blooki, of the agency’s environmental outreach department, said the programme would not be embedded in the curriculum, but rather be used by teachers to expand their understanding of green issues.
“The ultimate goal is to educate youth and the community. The speakers are local experts and we are training teachers to be part of the Sustainable Schools initiative,” Ms Blooki said.
“In the future, it will be open to everyone. Visitors to Abu Dhabi, for example, can view information on the platform about biodiversity and what they can see when they are here.
“Right now, the focus is on schools and educators.”
Available content will include books, presentations and interactive videos for students.
The school currently has 8 learning paths and 53 courses, 42 of which are focused on the institution’s Sustainable Schools initiative.
The project is supported by groups including Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and the Emirates Fund for Nature (WWF).
Students who complete the available ecology courses will receive a certificate marking their achievement.
