A consortium of Orascom Construction and Metito, together with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), will develop, own and operate a large-scale seawater treatment and water transportation project worth up to US$2.4 billion in Abu Dhabi, UAE Compare.
Orascom Construction is the leader of the consortium.
The greenfield project will be funded on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for a term of 30 years. Adnoc and Taqa will jointly hold 51% of the SPV, with Orascom Construction and Metito holding 49% (24.5% each).
The large-scale project will include a new seawater nanofiltration plant with a treatment capacity of more than 110 million imperial gallons per day (500,000 cubic meters per day), in addition to seawater inflow and outflow facilities, pumping stations, approximately 75 kilometers of water pipelines, and more than 230 kilometers of field distribution network to support reservoir pressure maintenance in Abu Dhabi’s Bab and Bu Hasa fields.
The project will replace the aquifer water injection system currently used to maintain reservoir pressure in the Adnoc onshore field, thereby ensuring a sustainable water supply for Adnoc’s onshore operations while protecting the UAE’s natural aquifer resources. The project will also increase energy efficiency by up to 30% compared to current injection systems and reduce ADNOC’s environmental footprint.
Osama Bishai, CEO of Orascom Construction, commented: “We are proud to partner with Adnoc and Taqa to deliver a project that is critical to the sustainable development of the UAE’s oil and gas industry. We began our focus on this important water project more than a decade ago , and has since been instrumental in undertaking some of the most complex projects in the field. We are also pleased to strengthen our presence in the UAE as we continue to target strategic projects in the region in various areas where we have developed strong expertise. The project also plays a key role in our growth strategy to pursue infrastructure investments that provide both construction opportunities and long-term recurring revenue.”
