Abu Dhabi police arrested 159 people for begging, including a woman who owned a luxury car.

Police have warned that individuals and groups have been spotted amassing large sums of money through begging.

Instead, police are urging residents to donate only through registered organizations.

Abu Dhabi police authorities have arrested 159 beggars across the emirate between November 6 and December 12, 2022, as part of their joint efforts to combat begging.

Begging is considered a punishable behavior in Abu Dhabi as it tarnishes the civilized image of any society.

“Begging is socially uncivilized and a crime in the UAE. Beggars have the potential to be fraudulent, defrauding people and profiting from their generosity,” the police said.

Police warn that numerous individuals and groups have been found to have amassed large sums of money through begging. Instead, Abu Dhabi Police urged residents to donate only through registered organisations.

In Abu Dhabi, individual offenders will be fined Dh5,000 (£614,000) and jailed for at least three months. Organizing begging carries tougher penalties for begging, including fines of at least Dh100,000 (£12.4m) and six months in jail.

The penalties also apply in cases of online begging, where people share requests via social media, text message, email or web portals, Gulf News reported.
