Abu Dhabi police have arrested two Arab men who were caught and tried to smuggle drugs into the neighbouring country.
Brigadier General Taher Ghareeb Al Dhaheri, head of the anti-narcotics department of Abu Dhabi Police’s criminal security unit, said on Tuesday that police investigated reports about the couple and monitored them before arresting them.
He noted that one of the men, who was running a drug business abroad, went to the UAE to complete a mission to smuggle drugs into neighboring countries, but failed.
“Drug dealers have no idea that the police are monitoring all their movements,” Al Dhaheri said.
He noted that the prime suspect was in shock when a team of narcotics officers arrived to arrest him and his accomplices, who were in possession of narcotic pills, as they were negotiating to execute the drug deal.
“These people think they have chosen the right time and place to complete their desperate attempt to smuggle drugs,” Al Dhaheri said.
Police said the suspect tried to use a new smuggling method, hiding rolls of narcotic pills inside garbage bags.
During interrogations, the men admitted that the narcotic pills belonged to them and that they planned to smuggle the drugs into neighboring countries.
The couple have been referred to the Public Prosecution Service for indictment.
Al Dhaheri underlined the passion of Abu Dhabi Police to combat the scourge of drugs.
Police are urging people to report any suspicious activity to police.
