Abu Dhabi school breaks world record for ‘largest astronaut dress-up party’

[ad_1]

All spacesuits worn must meet the stringent standards set by the Guinness Book of World Records. Students spent weeks designing and crafting their own helmets and wearing their own flags on their arms, highlighting the diverse Emirati community represented by students at Repton Abu Dhabi. Official referees were on hand to verify the record on Tuesday.

Principal Steven Rupton said: “Today [Tuesday], we commemorate the landmark mission of the UAE since embarking on an incredible journey to the International Space Station more than three years ago. With instinctual curiosity and a genuine love for understanding the wonders of our galaxy, our students have followed closely the UAE’s landmark achievements in space. We are very excited to mark this moment with this exciting achievement verified by Guinness World Records. I want to thank all the students, faculty and staff who made this record-breaking event possible. “

The previous record for the same feat was held by the Neurocentre – our place in space in the UK, which was set on 23 April this year. This is the first Guinness World Records title attempted by a student of Repton Abu Dhabi.

Luca Hughes, a fifth-year student at the school, was delighted to have broken the record.

“My favorite part of prep is making the suits and helmets, and we’ve been doing it for about a week. I love designing suits. Breaking a world record means a lot,” he said.

“My favorite part was drawing the astronaut suit and adding all the designs we could think of. I started by doing a design I liked and made it great,” says fourth grader Celine Turkiyeh.

Year 3 student Maris Borovac also likes the level of creativity involved.

“We can create any design [we liked on the helmets] Like little stars, planets, and even the NASA logo, it’s all up to us. This is a very creative process. We all help each other as a team, so we’re all on the same page,” Borovac said.
