Abu Dhabi Shipyard unveils new design for longest frigate

BEIRUT – United Arab Emirates company Abu Dhabi Shipyard The design for its 92-meter corvette was unveiled today, making it the longest vessel ever designed by the United Arab Emirates.

According to the company’s announcement at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2023), the design is for a low-profile, multi-purpose and fast pioneer vessel.

ADSB has shown growing interest in the South Asian and Indo-Pacific markets not only during the conference but earlier at the India Defense Expo and Forum 2022 in Jakarta. The UAE company has launched a 51-meter offshore patrol vessel there.

According to Christian Alexander, senior fellow and head of strategy, the ADSB push for indigenous naval capabilities is in line with the push by the local arms industry in the UAE and further pushes the government to become more self-sufficient rather than relying on foreign systems, the research arm of TRENDS Research & Advisory, which is An independent think tank based in the UAE.

“Building its own warships allows the UAE to better control its naval power and effectively protect its maritime interests. Abu Dhabi Shipyards plays an important role in this endeavor by providing the necessary shipbuilding and maintenance capabilities,” Alexander said.

According to the company’s announcement, the new vessel has been designed, built and equipped to perform a wide range of littoral missions. It will feature a helideck and hangar, as well as be capable of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations and two rigid-hull inflatable boats. Propulsion for the new vessel will be provided by so-called “combined diesel and diesel (CODAD)” engines, with a top speed of 28 knots.
