As part of two new initiatives, bus drivers are required to conduct routine maintenance checks on their vehicles, adhere to speed limits and ensure they stay on designated routes.
Drivers who fail to pay attention to school bus stop signs will be fined Dh1,000 and have 10 demerit points on their licence.
They must stop no less than five metres from the bus when the stop sign is activated.
As part of a new campaign called “For Your Safety and Your Children in Safe Hands”, students will not be allowed to get off school buses anywhere except in officially designated areas.
The bus supervisor will also be responsible for ensuring that the children are wearing seat belts at all times and that the bus is empty at the end of their round.
