The upcoming Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), a global initiative led by the UAE and its clean energy leader Masdar, will take place during the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President, and aligned with his commitment to advancing sustainability as a fundamental driver of the UAE’s economic and social advancement, ADSW will assume a crucial role in sustaining global climate efforts at COP28. It will facilitate meaningful and inclusive discussions among all international stakeholders, transforming commitments into tangible solutions for achieving a net-zero future.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President-Designate, remarked, “As the UAE looks ahead to hosting COP28, it is essential that we leverage every available opportunity to accelerate an equitable and orderly transition to clean energy and to maintain the 1.5-degree goal.
Originally established by Masdar in 2008, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) has evolved into a prominent global initiative that extends well beyond its initial duration. The special edition of ADSW during COP28 offers a vital platform for a broader community of key stakeholders to voice their perspectives and expedite an inclusive path to a net-zero future.”
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, the CEO of Masdar, commented, “This special edition of ADSW offers a significant opportunity to highlight the UAE’s Year of Sustainability during COP28 and reflects the enduring commitment to climate action upheld by Masdar’s global initiative, ADSW.
We take pride in hosting this unique ADSW event at COP28 and eagerly anticipate the participation of key stakeholders in the fields of sustainability and clean energy as we collaboratively address the world’s most critical and immediate challenges.”
The ADSW Summit, scheduled for December 4 at the Connect Conference Centre in Expo City Dubai, will carry the theme “United on Climate Action at COP28.” It will convene visionary leaders from the public sector, civil society, and business to explore strategies for expediting the equitable transition toward a net-zero future.
Positioned within COP28’s thematic finance day, the summit will delve into topics such as inclusive investments, climate finance, and pathways to accelerate global sustainable development.
Throughout COP28, ADSW will serve as a conduit for thought leadership by hosting events in both the blue and green zones, facilitating timely and pertinent discussions on climate action and sustainability for accredited parties, observer delegates, and the general public.
Within the Green Zone, the ADSW Partnership Hub will oversee a series of structured collaborative activities, fostering the exchange of ideas and the establishment of fruitful business relationships among participants. Additionally, during the evenings, the hub will host networking receptions, providing attendees with opportunities to relax, connect, and share insights on climate action.
ADSW’s virtual content platform, ADSW Live, will broadcast a series of live interviews directly from the Green Zone. These interviews will capture daily reactions to climate discussions and offer timely summaries of sustainability-related content.
ADSW at COP28 will also spotlight the WiSER initiative, dedicated to empowering women and girls as catalysts for change and innovation while ensuring their voices resonate throughout sustainability discussions. WiSER will coordinate a range of activations throughout COP28.
The “Youth 4 Sustainability” initiative by Masdar, which invests in and actively supports the development of young leaders in sustainability, will host the Y4S Forum on December 8.
Sponsors for ADSW at COP28 include the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Investcorp, and HSBC.
