Abu Dhabi T10: Pretorius helps Samp Army beat Bangla Tigers by 15 points

Abu Dhabi, 24 November (IANS): South African striker Dwaine Pretorius scored 3 for 11 to help rookie Samp Army beat the Bangla Tigers by 15 points in the Abu Dhabi T10 match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Thursday.

Batting first, the Samp Army have pitched just 100/5 in their 10 overs before they stifled runs in their last five overs, limiting the Bangla Tigers to 85/3 and 15 wins.

After winning the toss and opting to pitch first, Bangla Tigers captain Shakib Al Hasan introduced himself for the first time and pitched to Samp Army opener captains Moeen Ali and Johnson Charles.

Moeen Ali hit Shakib’s fifth for six overs and joined Charles for 12 in the first innings. Rohan Mustafa pitched in the second inning and allowed just six runs, including Charles’ boundary-to-bad point.

The third ending is sensational. Benny Howell had Moeen Ali out on the first ball of the game. Ali hit Howell to Colin Munro for 11 on the deep square leg. A ball later, Howell cleanly beat Johnson-Charles by 7. Howell conceded just two runs in that game and took two wickets.

Two of the best sluggers in David Miller and Shimron Hetmyer then came to the crease. Matheesha Pathirana finished fourth after conceding just six runs. Hetmyer met Howell’s first pitch with a six-over. Samp Army conceded David Miller’s wicket for the second and ran out of three when Ben Cutting scored the second.

The Wickets kept falling as Pathirana forced Dwaine Pretorious to hit the ball high. The next man, Karim Janat, had a lucky escape as he was dropped by Zazai at the end of Pathirana’s last ball. At the end of the sixth inning, the Samps made 4 of 46 shots.

Jake Ball hit the seventh inning, hit to boundary by Karim Janat and six by Hetmyer. The Samp Army still needs some big blows before they can set a reasonable goal. Rohan Mustafa came back in the eighth. Aside from the boundary Kareem scored at halftime, he conceded just eight. Hopes of a score over 100 were starting to fade.

Hetmyer hit Ball’s first pitch in the ninth to make it 6-6, while Karim hit the last pitch for a boundary. Umair Ali of the United Arab Emirates was called to take the last pitch. He had Hetmyer penalized for 38 points by Rohan Mustafa. His 21 balls had two boundaries and three sixes.

George Garton hit his first ball facing the boundary. He then played the last ball to Bauer deep in the middle of the goal, who missed the ball and caused a boundary. Thus, the Samp Army throws 5 out of 10 pitches for 100 pitches.

The Bangla Tigers chase started with opener Hazratullah Zazai hitting a 3-pointer by Sheldon Cottrell. The first ball of the innings was hit back point boundary, the third ball went through extra cover, and the fourth ball was pulled to center goal. Zazai also hit George Garton’s second ball of the second innings to make it 6-1, but he was unable to score after that as Garton’s bowling was too tight.

In the third inning, Evan Lewis got aggressive and hit Anrich Noterjee’s boundary and threw six consecutive pitches. A 39-run opening partnership ended in the fourth inning when Dwaine Pretorius had Lewis out, caught by goalie Charles for 14. Zazai continued to punish Cottrell in the fifth, scoring another six runs to the center field. At the halfway mark, the Bangla Tigers were exactly 50-1.

Then begins an exciting game of bowling by the Samp Army bowlers. Karim Janat’s sixth innings was a fine game, giving up just seven runs. Norte lost just three points and gained just seven. This increases the required run rate to 13.66.

Pretorius hit two of eight and also took a 3-pointer from Zazai, which was caught by Garton on a sweeper cover for 35 runs. He finished the game with a final pitch to put Joe Clarke on nine points from Charles. Pretorius’ eighth over allowed just eight runs and took two wickets to tip the game in Samp Army fashion.

With 33 runs needed in the last 12 balls, Gatton stopped the run despite Munro hitting six in the first ball. There were only ten runs in that game, and it took 23 for the final one.

Karim Janat’s first pitch of the final over was hit by Cutting to the boundary line, but he has since thrown only singles in his second, third and fifth overs for a total of seven runs. Thus, the Samp Army took their first win, limiting the Bangla Tigers to 85 runs, 3 runs and 10 runs.

Brief scores: Samp Army 100/5 in 10 games (Shimron Hetmyer 38, Karim Janat 22 not out; Benny Howell 2-17) 85/3 in 10 games over Bangla Tigers (Hazratullah Zazai 35, Evin Lewis 14; Dwaine Pretorius 3- 11) Runs 15 times.
