Abu Dhabi to trial drone delivery scheme

[ad_1]

For some Abu Dhabi residents, drone deliveries will soon become a reality – as a pilot program is about to launch in the capital.

This drone Deliver critical medical supplies, fresh food and documents over short distances to Emirates Post designated locations in Abu Dhabi.

Packages and documents will then be transported by drones further afield across the emirate as part of an initiative by AD Ports Group’s digital arm Maqta Gateway, Emirates Post and air logistics provider SkyGo.

The plan is to assess needs and measure the benefits of using drones to deliver small and medium packages, while providing real-time tracking.

No more information was provided on the drones or the areas that will be included in the trial period, but officials said details of the trial run will be released by the end of the year, with a commercial launch planned for next year.

“The drone service can provide customers in Abu Dhabi with greater convenience and faster delivery times, while ensuring a positive impact on the environment,” said Noura Al Dhaheri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Group Digital Cluster.

Maqta Gateway is keen to collaborate on projects that transform trade and logistics, she said.

Emirates Post Group CEO Abdulla Al Ashram said the postal operator is interested in offering customers new options for receiving small and medium parcels.

“By supporting this project, we believe we can ease road congestion and reduce fuel consumption for last-mile deliveries,” he said.

Mohammed Al Dhaheri, CEO of SkyGo, Said the company’s main partner in the drone project is the Civil Aviation Administration.

This is another step in the process of transforming global trade to be more efficient, sustainable and environmentally responsible,” he said.

The UAE has conducted numerous demonstrations of drones, showing deployment in firefighting, weather monitoring, surveying and even sowing.

The use of drones for delivery services is growing in other parts of the world. Amazon is working to develop its own system to reduce “last mile” delivery costs.
