Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Airport reopens after major upgrade

UAE – Al Bateen Executive Airport has reopened following the successful completion of a major renovation project that will allow the airport to meet growing operational demands while meeting the highest levels of safety, compliance and certification.

During the project, close cooperation between the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Abu Dhabi Airports (AD Airports) followed all necessary regulatory frameworks to ensure the highest level of compliance and all necessary approvals were obtained without delay .

Commenting on the development, Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, said: “The renovation of Al Bateen Administrative Airport demonstrates our aviation partners in the UAE’s commitment to investing in the safety, modernity and sustainability of the region’s only dedicated administrative airport. .”

“Working with Abu Dhabi Airports from project inception to completion has ensured the highest level of compliance with national standards, regulations, guidance material and international best practices as outlined by the GCAA,” he said.

Essential work was completed in 90 days, including resurfacing and widening the existing 3.2km runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft and a number of new border walls, upgraded ground lighting, enhanced signage and landscaping. Another major part of the work completed was the upgrade and refurbishment of the Airport Ground Lighting (AGL) at Al Bateen Executive Airport, proving that the airport can operate Code 4D aircraft.

Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “In line with our strategic objectives, Abu Dhabi Airports will continue to invest in the development and maintenance of our world-class infrastructure. The upgrade to Al Bateen Executive Airport will bring some tangible benefits Among the benefits, such as increased airport capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, extended runway life, and reduced maintenance time and costs.”

“As part of the refurbishment campaign, more than 105,000 tonnes of bitumen were used in different areas of the runway, runway shoulders and taxiways, with a total area of ​​approximately 240,000 square meters, 23 kilometers of cables, in addition to 15.5 kilometers of pipes and Installation of more than 400 new manholes,” he added.

Frank McCrorie, Chief Operating Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “Over 800 dedicated staff were involved in the successful completion of this project, while ensuring minimal disruption to residents, demonstrating our collaboration and drive for development Determination.”

“As the only dedicated administrative airport in the Middle East, we are committed to providing our customers with security facilities that meet their requirements,” he added.
