[ad_1]

ABU DHABI – United Arab Emirates – In line with its vision to build a world-class research and development center in Abu Dhabi, ASPIRE today announced four international Visiting Professorships (ViPs). With a research grant of AED 10 million, the program attracts the best researchers from leading global institutions to build an international network and further advance meaningful research in UAE priority areas.

Khalifa University (KU) will host two ‘Eminent Fellows’ ViPs, who hold extensive international credentials in their fields of study. Professor Hany Farag, with expertise in sustainable transport solutions, will join KU from York University, Canada. During his tenure at KU, he will collaborate on research focused on distributed energy sources such as electricity, natural gas and hydrogen transmission systems to implement a unified smart energy framework.

The second ViP resident at KU is Professor Wang Huai from Aalborg University in Denmark, who has expertise in the field of power electronics research. He will work with his colleagues at KU to use tools such as physical informatics artificial intelligence (AI) to address long-standing challenges in the reliability and operational efficiency of power electronic converters used in energy systems. KU will provide two visiting professors with access to its best research teams to facilitate their efforts to find impactful solutions to key challenges in the field.

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and Zayed University (ZU) will host two ‘Rising Star’ ViPs. These professorships are open to mid-career academics who are renowned in their areas of focus; the awards will provide them with the opportunity to broaden and further advance the scope of their research.

The UAEU will host Professor Adriano Camps, a globally renowned scholar working in the fields of remote sensing, microwave engineering and GNSS reflectometry. Professor Camps will share his extensive experience with the UAEU and the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) in Abu Dhabi after building a small satellite facility at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in his native Catalonia, Spain, In cooperation with Tawazun and Airbus, the first satellite manufacturing plant was established in the UAE.

Prof. Jalel Ben Othman from CentraleSupélec, Université Paris-Saclay, France, will bring his expertise to ZU. His research focuses on intelligent traffic management and he will aim to revolutionize Abu Dhabi’s transport infrastructure through optimized and efficient road management. He will employ technologies such as artificial intelligence, smart networks, connected and autonomous vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance traffic management in the emirate.

Commenting on the announcement, Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and ASPIRE CEO Dr Ray O. Johnson said: “The ASPIRE ViP program will bring to Abu Dhabi some of the world’s leading researchers in their fields. Their work “Will help develop solutions to some of the most complex challenges we face in the UAE. This global collaboration and integration with Abu Dhabi’s R&D ecosystem will advance our research and deliver results with real-world impact in key areas.” I am very excited about these partnerships.”

Dr. Johnson continued, “At TII, we look forward to collaborating with these outstanding international researchers and sharing insights in the fields of energy, aerospace, transportation and sustainable development. TII’s Advanced Technology Research Center is dedicated to connecting with like-minded peers around the world Collaborate to advance science and innovation. We look forward to welcoming them to Abu Dhabi’s thriving research ecosystem.”

Earlier this year, ASPIRE announced an investment of AED 200 million to fund three research institutes to strengthen food security, precision medicine biotechnology and sustainable energy systems. The research institutes located in UAEU and KU will likewise facilitate collaboration between world-leading global research centers and Abu Dhabi’s R&D ecosystem to advance the emirate’s knowledge economy.
