Abu Dhabi’s billions transformed Man City, but Guardiola made them unbeatable

[ad_1]

Until recent years, a traditional top-six team entered the season believing it could come out on top with good coaching and recruiting, win enough to score 80-plus points, and at least warrant a title challenge.

That has changed.

From 2007 to 2017, the Premier League champion once hit the 90-point mark.

City’s total points in three of their last four title wins are 100, 98 and 93 respectively. This time they are expected to score 94 points.

The runner-up’s points that year were 81, 97 and 92 points. Arsenal can still get 88 points this time. It was an incredible return for a team that had been labeled a “failure” this past week.

Whether it’s Arsenal this season, or Liverpool, where they’ve been underwhelming in the past two years, we have to reconsider the idea that a side has “killed” or “lost its chance” because they haven’t kept up with a better team. The pace of a deep, more resourced team by the ultimate coach.

The story of the 2022-23 season is not Arsenal’s failure. Whatever form it takes, the story is what City have done and will continue to do to extend their advantage.

Such levels are abnormal and, for most clubs, far beyond what is possible. With huge spending power led by talented players, Manchester City will not stop.

What hope is there for the rest? It’s just that Guardiola won’t be there forever, eras are coming to an end and the game is constantly evolving with new challengers.

Until then, Guardiola’s City were virtually unbeatable in a 38-game season, like any team.
