ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways touched down in Lisbon for the first time on Sunday, marking the start of scheduled flights between the emirate and the Portuguese capital.
The new service will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, offering 28 business class seats and 262 economy class seats.
Fernando d’Orey de Brito e Cunha Figueirinhas, Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to the UAE, and Chris Hedlin, Etihad Airways’ Vice President Network Planning, celebrated EY63’s inaugural flight at Abu Dhabi Airport, with celebrations ahead of take-off.
Upon arrival in Lisbon, Etihad Airways captains waved UAE and Portuguese flags in the cockpit to celebrate the launch of the new route.
Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “As we continue to expand our global network, we are delighted to fly to Lisbon for the first time. We look forward to welcoming guests to the historic city of Lisbon and introducing Portuguese people connect with the UAE and destinations in the Middle East, Asia and Australia.”
Originally declared a seasonal route due to high travel demand, Etihad has extended the service into winter, making it a year-round operation.
The maiden flight to Lisbon coincides with the launch of Etihad Airways’ summer flights to the Greek island of Mykonos and Malaga on June 16 and June 18.
