The department said demand had doubled in the past three months after the launch of the “fast” civil marriage service, which allows weddings to be completed within 24 hours of an initial court application for approval, rather than the previous 48 hours.
ADJD said the express service was launched in response to the large number of tourists seeking to take advantage of the low cost (costing Dh300) and process efficiency of getting married in Abu Dhabi.
Before the law came into force, only couples of the same faith could marry in the emirate. They can choose to marry in a place of worship and then register their union in court.
If they choose to marry in court, they will need a legal guardian and two witnesses. In both cases, it was considered a religious marriage, not a civil union.
The new court doesn’t need witnesses or lawyers — just the bride and groom.
Cases are on the rise
The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court said 95 applications for no-fault divorce and joint custody were registered – a 40 percent increase since May.
Under the law enacted this year, spouses have the right to divorce without proving that the marriage has been harmed or going through any lengthy mediation process.
A civil divorce judgment is made at the first hearing within 30 days of filing the divorce petition, without referring the case to the Family Guidance Department.
For children, joint and equal custody of the parents is automatically granted upon divorce, with procedures for resolving disputes.
The new figures also show courts received 820 applications for civil probate, 145 applications for certificates of parentage and foreign children’s birth certificates, and 65 civil inheritance cases, a 125 per cent increase over the past three months. .
The law stipulates that the property of a foreigner residing in Abu Dhabi is divided among 50% of the assets of the surviving spouse, while the remaining half is divided equally among the children, regardless of gender.
The court also decides on the distribution of the estate in Arabic and English within 30 days from the date of registration of the case.
