Abu Dhabi’s Hub71 and Yahsat collaborate on satellite technology

Hub71, Abu Dhabi’s global tech ecosystem, Has entered into a partnership with Al Yah Satellite Communications, better known as Yesat, Promote the development of new technologies in the field of satellite communications.

The two entities will work together to find start-ups that have the potential to boost the UAE’s space industry and enhance satellite communications technology.

Hub71 and Yahsat will also focus on providing business opportunities for startups in Abu Dhabi to help them grow, Hub71 said on Monday.

Mental VR, Hub71’s virtual reality software development company, has been awarded the first contract resulting from the partnership to support Yahsat for distance learning.

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat, said: “Our partnership with Hub71 is in line with our commitment to building local capabilities and enhancing the nation’s space economy by partnering with the start-up ecosystem.”

“As two Emirati entities with a base base in Abu Dhabi, we look forward to working together to create greater opportunities for the growth and advancement of the satellite services industry.”

Founded in 2007, Yahsat provides multi-mission satellite services in over 150 countries in Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America, Asia and Oceania.

It currently has a fleet of five satellites that could expand its reach to more than 80 percent of the world’s population.

Yahsat plans to launch Thuraya 4 Next Generation Satellite (T4-NGS), next year. The satellite is expected to begin commercial service in the second half of 2024.

Yahsat also recently acquired a minority stake in eSat Global, a provider of IoT connectivity solutions, as it seeks to expand its business in the fast-growing IoT space.

Meanwhile, from its inception in 2019 until the third quarter of 2022, Hub71 startups have raised more than AED 3.2 billion ($871 million), generated AED 2.5 billion in revenue and generated 800 million direct employment opportunities.

Hub71 has about 200 start-ups representing 20 industries.

Badr Al Olama, acting CEO of Hub71, said: “Through this partnership, we will promote economic opportunities and strengthen the UAE’s growing position as a leading global centre of technological excellence.”
