Abu Dhabi’s Masdar will join its partners in the upcoming 3.3 gigawatt (GW) of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP) led by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), according to the official UAE news agency WAM. 4th round said.
The report announcing the opening of Masdar’s office in the kingdom said that SPPC’s 4th round of tenders will include three wind turbines with a total capacity of 1.8 GW (Yanbu 700 MW; Al Ghat 600 MW; Waad Al Shamal 500 MW) Power plant and two solar parks. 1.5 GW (Al Hinakiyah 1,100 MW; Tubarjal 400 MW) will be developed using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.
Masdar is a consortium partner of EDF Renewables and Nesma at the 400 megawatt (MW) Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, which will begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The same consortium is also developing the 300MW South Jeddah Noor solar photovoltaic plant in the Third Jeddah Industrial City. The project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2023.
Round 3 of NREP includes four solar photovoltaic (PV) IPP plants with a combined capacity of 1.2GW.
Round 2 targets the development of 6 solar PV IPPs with a total capacity of approximately 1.47 GW, while Round 1 includes a solar PV IPP and a wind IPP with a total capacity of 700 MW.
Saudi Arabia plans to generate 50% of its electricity from clean energy by the end of the century, with a target of 58.7GW from renewables.
