The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) announced today (12 October) that it has received three separate water projects for the development of its new Shuweihat 4 Reverse Osmosis (S4 RO ).
Following this, Ewec said it will now move forward with the evaluation process.
According to Ewec, the S4 RO project will use low-carbon-intensive RO technology to desalinate seawater to supply up to 70 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), thereby improving water security in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi.
The plant will also ensure an optimized and efficient water supply by procuring competitive reverse osmosis technology.
CEO Othman Al Ali said EWEC is supporting its strategic goal of reducing the system’s carbon footprint by accelerating the decoupling of water and power generation capacity by employing state-of-the-art reverse osmosis technology.
“The S4 RO desalination project will play a key role in ensuring water supply security and reducing CO2 emissions, actively supporting the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. We are delighted to have received a competitive bid for the project and will now move forward with the relocation our assessment process,” he said.
The Expression of Interest (EOI) phase was held last October and Ewec has since received a total of 35 expressions of interest from potential bidders for the project.
Subsequently, tenders were issued to the bidders who passed the qualification review process in March, and 18 bidders were qualified to bid after submitting their qualification tenders.
Once submitted, proposals go through a detailed technical and commercial evaluation process to select the best proposal.
Ewec said the winning bidder could be announced in the first quarter of 2023, after which a water purchase agreement would be signed with the developer. It added that the target commercial operation date of the S4 RO project is the third quarter of 2025.-TradeArabia News Service
