ADAFSA and KCGEB sign partnership agreement to implement Abu Dhabi’s Agrigenomics Project

ABU DHABI – The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) and the Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (KCGEB) have signed a partnership agreement to implement a detailed implementation plan for all phases of the Abu Dhabi Agrigenomics Initiative .

Launched by ADAFSA in partnership with a number of national research centres, this initiative is the first of its kind in the region and aims to apply best international practices related to agricultural genetics research, thereby enhancing Abu Dhabi’s position in the field at the regional and international level .

The agreement was signed by Dr. Maryam Hareb Al Suwaidi, ADAFSA Deputy Director General for Operations; KCGEB Director Khalid Ahmed Amir.

In this regard, Dr Maryam Al Suwaidi said: “This agreement aims to facilitate our collaboration with KCGEB through the implementation of the Agrigenome Project. This initiative promotes sustainable agricultural production by improving plant and animal species, thereby increasing the agricultural sector’s interest in Abu Dhabi. contribution. Gross domestic product.”

Al Suwaidi stressed that the Genome Project will help create a scientific database for the field and qualify national genomics research experts. The program serves as a local and regional reference in the use of genomic technologies to improve agricultural production and rationalize natural resource consumption.

Dr. Khalid Amiri stated that KCGEB has extensive experience in applying genomic technology and providing unique solutions for sustainable agricultural development. He noted that the Genome Project reflects ADAFSA’s foresight to achieve its goals and localize scientific knowledge.

Amiri thanked ADAFSA for his cooperation with KCGEB and expressed his confidence in achieving the desired goals of the agreement. He added that the center will use the latest technology to decode the genomes of different organisms and reuse them for agricultural development.

This plan is part of ADAFSA’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025. It aims to develop local botanical, animal and fish flavors to improve agricultural production and address the emirate’s climate and environmental challenges. The plan also includes the establishment of gene banks and databases to protect local plant, animal and fish genetic resources.

In addition to building local capacity to protect and register local plant and animal breeds internationally, the program will support gene sequencing processes, phenotypic and genetic trait research in plants and animals, and identification of genetic markers for desired animals and animal traits .
