Adnoc forms alliance with ThyssenKrupp to build ammonia plant

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has signed a memorandum of understanding with thyssenkrupp Uhde, the German subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Group, which specializes in chemical engineering, to explore long-term partnerships to create new hydrogen markets and facilitate global clean energy value chains .

The agreement, signed today (January 17) at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), focuses on the development of a large-scale ammonia cracker project to extract hydrogen from transported ammonia.

Ammonia acts as a carrier for hydrogen and is easier to compress and transport. When transported, ammonia needs to be broken down or “cracked” into hydrogen once it reaches its destination before it can be used in the energy value chain.

Adnoc, a responsible supplier of reliable, low-carbon-intensity energy, said that under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the development of a large-scale ammonia cracker using ThyssenKrupp technology.

It said the agreement would also lead to the exploration of opportunities in the clean energy value chain to supply and transport low-carbon or green ammonia from the UAE to large-scale ammonia cracking facilities globally.

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director, Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth Council, said: “Adnoc’s rapidly growing hydrogen business benefits from the UAE’s abundant and competitive energy reserves. We are committed to strengthening our reputation as a reliable low carbon supplier. Status-intensive energy, creating new revenue streams and developing a global hydrogen market. To do this, we will work with like-minded partners, such as ThyssenKrupp, to provide tangible solutions that contribute to the decarbonization of the energy sector.

The ammonia cracking process is based on the globally proven Wood reformer technology, which is used in more than 130 large chemical plants worldwide.

Cord Landsmann, chief executive of thyssenkrupp Uhde, said many countries in Europe, as well as several others around the world, are looking to import clean hydrogen to decarbonize industry and society.

“Clean ammonia is the best way to transport hydrogen by ship, and together with Adnoc we will be putting the final piece in the puzzle for global scale clean hydrogen trade,” he said.

Adnoc notes that it has invested in low-carbon ammonia, with carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during production being captured and stored underground.

In May 2021, the company announced the construction of a 1 million tons per year low-carbon ammonia production facility at the TA’ZIZ Industrial Ecosystem and Chemicals Center. The company said it had significantly expanded its strategic energy partnerships along the hydrogen value chain and delivered demonstration cargoes of low-carbon ammonia to customers in Germany and Asia to test its application.

Adnoc is also investing in green hydrogen and renewable energy through the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), a clean energy power station that will put the UAE at the forefront of the energy transition, the statement said.

With this investment, Adnoc aims to become a world leader in green hydrogen, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
