In a bid to boost the UAE’s hydrogen economy, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with John Cockerill Hydrogen, a major developer of large-scale technology solutions, and Strata Manufacturing, a composite aerostructures manufacturing facility, that could see electrolyzers being used for the first time in the UAE. manufacture.

The agreement, backed by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), brings the production of electrolyzers to the UAE for the first time, thereby enhancing decarbonization and domestic manufacturing.

The electrolyzer produces green hydrogen, an energy source made from renewable energy that emits no carbon dioxide when used.

The arrangement envisaged by the agreement will promote the development of a green hydrogen economy in the UAE through the domestic manufacture of electrolyzers and support the UAE’s ‘Make in the UAE’ initiative to boost local industry and create an investor-friendly environment.

Announcing the news at the “Make it in the Emirates” forum in Abu Dhabi, the ministry said its support for the cooperation agreement is mainly aimed at boosting electrolyser manufacturing for local use and export.

It was signed by Hanan Balalaa, Senior Vice President, New Energy and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage, ADNOC, Ismail Ali Abdulla, Managing Director and CEO, Strata Manufacturing, and Raphael Tilot, CEO, John Cockerill Hydrogen, in the presence of the Senior Minister of Industry and Advanced Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Technology and Adnoc Managing Director and Group CEO, Sara Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, and other officials.

“Facilitating collaboration between leading national companies and international and local manufacturers is key to these efforts, which strengthens the industrial sector’s contribution to decarbonization in line with the UAE’s net zero and COP28 targets,” Al Suwaidi said.

“Under the leadership of ADNOC, this strategic cooperation agreement strengthens our industrial sector and provides the necessary capabilities for future industries to thrive. The agreement will particularly benefit the hydrogen energy sector, which represents the most important future industry One, and lays the groundwork for a green economy,” he added.

Commenting on the deal, Balalaa said: “We are delighted to be working with John Cockerill Hydrogen and Strata Manufacturing on this landmark initiative which promises to manufacture electrolysers for the first time in the UAE. Hydrogen is a key fuel in the energy transition and the agreement Highlights how the energy sector can work with industry and hard-to-abate sectors to achieve large-scale decarbonisation, drive low-carbon economic growth and strengthen energy security.”

She noted that Adnoc will continue to advance low-carbon solutions and decarbonization technologies to strengthen its position as a responsible energy provider and support the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Strategy initiative.
