ADNOC sends first low carbon ammonia cargo from UAE to Germany.

Demonstration cargo is the first of several test shipments to Hamburg, Germany as ADNOC expands strategic energy partnerships across the hydrogen value chain

Partnership with end-user Aurubis and logistics company HHLA highlights ADNOC’s role as trusted exporter of low-carbon fuels as UAE focuses on industrial growth opportunities in energy transition

ADNOC plans to significantly increase its hydrogen production to support the UAE’s ambition to supply up to 25% of its hydrogen demand in key global markets.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced that its first shipment of low-carbon ammonia has left the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for Hamburg, Germany. This is the first low carbon ammonia cargo to be shipped to Germany.

The demonstration cargo will be delivered to Aurubis, a leading global supplier of non-ferrous metals and one of the world’s largest copper recyclers, headquartered in Hamburg. Once in Germany, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), one of Europe’s leading logistics companies, will handle the shipment.

The demonstration cargo produced by Fertiglobe, in partnership with ADNOC and OCI, at its Fertil facility in Ruwais Industrial Park, Abu Dhabi, is the first of several test cargoes ADNOC has sold to customers in Germany as ADNOC expands its strategic energy partnership across the hydrogen value chain. batch.

The shipment follows some similar sales of low-carbon ammonia to customers in Asia. Aurubis plans to use low-carbon ammonia as a feedstock in its wire plant to test its application as an additional low-carbon energy source for industrial use.

The hydrogen it contains has the potential to be a low-carbon energy substitute for energy-intensive processes in polymetallic production.

This is another major milestone in the planned expansion of hydrogen and low carbon ammonia production capacity in Abu Dhabi, where ADNOC is developing a new world-scale 1 Mtpa low carbon ammonia plant TA’ZIZ, Chemicals, Industrial Service and logistics center, located in Ruwais Industrial Park.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed JaberUAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO said:

This demonstration cargo of low carbon ammonia builds on the longstanding bilateral relationship between the UAE and Germany and our growing partnership in clean energy.

“It underlines ADNOC’s expanding role as a trusted exporter of low-carbon fuels, as the UAE focuses on industrial growth opportunities in the energy transition.”

“Our collaboration with our German customers also underlines ADNOC’s ambitious growth plans for clean hydrogen production, as well as carrier fuels such as ammonia, which will play a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors.”

“We are committed to accelerating and deepening private and public sector collaboration on clean hydrogen projects that will reduce carbon emissions and the carbon intensity of the energy that supports our daily lives.”

Roland HarlinsThe CEO of Aurubis stated:

As the world’s most efficient and sustainable network of smelters, Aurubis supplies metals that are vital to megatrends such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and digitalization, as well as decarbonization.

“In order to guarantee stable processes at our plants, we are expanding our reliable energy portfolio, thereby simultaneously investing in the decarbonisation of our production. ADNOC’s first commissioning of low-carbon ammonia is an important milestone in our long-term vision for hydrogen solutions, This will help achieve our decarbonization goals.”

Angela TizrasHHLA CEO said:

With its experience in port handling and logistics of containerized dangerous goods, its vast network of seaport terminals, hinterland connections and European intermodal hubs, HHLA is delighted to be part of the strategic energy to facilitate the introduction of hydrogen and its derivatives to Germany and Europe import partnership.

His Excellency Michael Westhagman, The Hamburg Senator for Economy and Innovation said:

I very much welcome the leadership of our international and national partners in business and ports in these real-world industrial trials of decarbonisation.

“We need these real-world discoveries and commitments to support the development of a green hydrogen economy. Hamburg as an industrial base and a European distribution port is a blueprint for this transformation and therefore a focus for Germany.”

ADNOC signed agreements with a number of German companies to explore cooperation opportunities in low-carbon and renewable hydrogen during the visit of His Excellency Dr. Robert Habeck, German Deputy Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action to the UAE in March 2021 Derivatives.

Building on its position as a pioneer in hydrogen production, ADNOC plans to significantly increase its hydrogen production to support the UAE’s ambition to supply up to 25% of imported hydrogen in key global markets.

Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy projects that import demand for clean hydrogen will be around 3 million tons per year (mtpa) by 2030 and 15 mtpa per year by 2050, according to the Hydrogen Council, hydrogen could meet 18% of global energy demand need.

low carbon ammonia It is the most promising large-scale hydrogen carrier and potentially clean fuel for a wide range of applications including transportation, power generation and industry, including steel, cement and fertilizer production.

It is made from nitrogen and clean hydrogen from a natural gas feedstock, and the carbon dioxide by-product from the hydrogen production process is captured and stored.
