Affected by Typhoon Chanthu, some traffic at Shanghai port and airport was suspended | Business and Economic News

[ad_1]

The shutdown could further delay shipments and damage global supply chains, which are already struggling to deal with the impact of China’s record exports and the local COVID-19 outbreak.

With Typhoon Chanthu approaching Shanghai, Shanghai has stopped operations at some container ports and will cancel most flights on Monday and Tuesday because it is the financial capital of China and a major shipping hub.

Shanghai International Ports Group stated in a statement on its WeChat account that the city’s world’s largest container port has suspended some container-related businesses. Although the tropical storm is expected to make landfall in the southern part of the city on Monday night, the state-owned media “Global Times” quoted meteorological experts as saying that the typhoon would not cross the coast.

The newspaper added that the wind intensity will remain strong in the next two days. After affecting the southern coast of China, Taiwan and the Philippines, Qamdo began to pour rainwater on the city of 25 million people from Sunday.

The company said on its WeChat account on Sunday that Ningbo Meidong Container Terminal Co., Ltd., near Zhejiang Province, had suspended some container operations from Friday. Since Saturday afternoon, the operation of the main terminal of Zhoushan Port in the province has ceased. Zhoushan Port is home to some of China’s largest oil storage tanks and refineries.

The China Maritime Safety Administration issued a warning last week to the southeastern province of Fujian where Xiamen Port is located, asking ships to adjust their sailing plans and leave the waters affected by the typhoon.

The suspension may further delay shipments and damage global supply chains, which are already struggling to cope with China’s record exports and the impact of the local Covid-19 epidemic. Asian ports have become one of the bottlenecks in global trade because the demand for cargo in Europe and the United States exceeds the capacity of terminals and ships.

According to data from Shanghai International Port Group, Shanghai’s terminals handled a total of 43.5 million TEUs last year, making the entire city the largest container port in the world. TEU is the industry term for “20-foot equivalent unit” and is a standard measure of container ship capacity. Officials from Shanghai International Port Group Co., Ltd. could not be reached for comment. The call to Ningbo Zhoushan Port Authority was unanswered.

Shanghai announced that due to the weather, all flights at Shanghai Pudong International Airport after 11 am on Monday will be cancelled, and all flights at Hongqiao Airport in the west will also be cancelled after 3 pm on the same day. The Airport Authority Sunday night.

Earlier on Sunday, the Shanghai Municipal Government stated that all kindergartens and primary schools would be closed on Monday afternoon and Tuesday, some subway lines would be suspended, and parks and other outdoor tourist attractions would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the state news agency Xinhua, Zhejiang Province upgraded its emergency response to Chanthu to the highest level on Sunday, closing schools and suspending air and rail services in several cities. According to a report from China’s National Television on Monday, the authorities also suspended some high-speed rail services in the Yangtze River Delta.

Taiwan lifted the warning after the storm passed the island on Monday morning.
