Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says he fled the country to prevent “blood incidents”-News

[ad_1]

Ghani did not say where he had been, but the Afghan media hinted that he had gone to Tajikistan.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he had fled the country on Sunday to “prevent massive bloodshed” as the Taliban entered the capital and ended the nationwide lightning offensive.

Taliban fighters have now entered the capital. Three senior Taliban sources told AFP that the insurgents have taken control of the presidential palace and are holding a security meeting in the capital.

Ghani said he believed that if he stayed, “countless patriots will be martyred and the city of Kabul will be destroyed.”

“The Taliban have won… they are now responsible for the honor, property and self-protection of their compatriots,” he said in a statement on Facebook.

“They are now facing a new historical test. Either maintain the reputation and honor of Afghanistan, or give priority to other places and networks,” he added.

He did not say where he had been, but Tolo News, the leading Afghan media group, hinted that he had gone to Tajikistan.

Abdullah Abdullah, who leads the peace process, earlier accused Ghani of “putting the people into this situation.”
