Afghanistan: Mass funeral for victims of Kandahar mosque attack | News

[ad_1]

A suicide bombing occurred on Friday in a Shiite mosque in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, and a mass funeral was held for the victims.

Government officials said 47 people were killed in the attack, but the community elder Haji Farhad said that the death toll was 63, but that may change because there are still many victims in serious conditions in the hospital.

On Saturday, relatives buried the bodies of the victims and called on the Taliban to protect them.

In a statement posted on social media late Friday, Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) It is said that two members of the organization shot and killed the security guard at the entrance of the Fatimiya Mosque in Kandahar Province.

It added that one detonated his explosive at the entrance of the mosque and the other detonated inside.

Friday’s attack was the deadliest since the United States’ dramatic withdrawal from Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to take control of the Afghan capital. This is also the organization’s first major attack in the south of the country.

ISKP has launched frequent attacks on its eastern strongholds, but recently there have been signs of expansion, attacking the north and Kabul. These attacks put the Taliban’s ability to counter the growing threat of ISKP into question.
