Afghanistan: People are eager to flee the Taliban, hoping for more time to show up-News

[ad_1]

Afghans hurriedly fled from Taliban rule on Thursday, but Western officials said the organization has pledged to allow some personnel to evacuate after the deadline for the withdrawal of American troops next week.

Since August 14th, more than 80,000 people have been evacuated, but a large number of people still remain outside the Kabul airport, hoping to escape the threat of retaliation and repression in Afghanistan led by the Taliban.

US Secretary of State Anthony Brinken said on Wednesday that the Taliban had promised to allow Americans, Afghans “at risk” and people from other countries to leave, even after Tuesday’s blockade.

“They have a responsibility to honor this commitment and provide a safe passage for anyone who wants to leave the country,” Brinken told reporters.

He added that of the 6,000 American citizens who expressed their desire to leave Afghanistan, at least 4,500 have already left.

After the German envoy to Kabul said that Taliban negotiators assured him that Afghans with correct documents could leave within hours after the deadline, Brinken made a speech, which was confirmed by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

Washington and its allies use huge military transport aircraft to transport thousands of Afghans every day, but this has become an increasingly difficult and desperate task.

Ask for help

Many Afghans are concerned about the reenactment of the cruel five-year Taliban regime that was overthrown in 2001, and the violent retaliation in cooperation with foreign troops, Western missions, and former US-backed governments.

Women are of particular concern, as they are largely prohibited from receiving education and employment, and can only leave their homes with male guardians during the organization’s reign from 1996 to 2001.

The airport of the Afghan capital is in chaos, and the US-led army is trying to maintain a safe border for the evacuation flights, surrounded by desperate Afghans.

Some people have foreign passports, visas or travel qualifications, but most people don’t. At least eight people were killed in the chaos.

“Is anyone…anyone…has a contact in the airport,” an American pleaded in a WhatsApp group that aims to share information about how people enter the airport.

“My guy worked for us in the 2010-15 season and needs to go out with his family of 5 people. It’s really bad.”

The Taliban have also been accused of preventing or slowing the entry of many people trying to reach the airport, although they deny the accusation.
