After deadly fighting, new conflict erupts between Armenia and Azerbaijan | World News

[ad_1]

New conflict breaks out between Azerbaijan and Armenia Wednesday, a day after nearly 100 soldiers were killed in the deadliest fighting between the former Soviet republics since 2020.

At least 49 Armenians and 50 Azerbaijani servicemen were killed in clashes on Tuesday, with Yerevan and Baku both accusing each other of fighting, prompting Russian President Vladimir Putin to call for calm.

The conflict has raised fears of another major armed conflict in the former Soviet Union, while Russian troops have been linked to the invasion of Ukraine.

A full-scale conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan would threaten to drag down major powers such as Russia and Turkey and destabilize vital pipeline corridors that transport oil and gas, just as a confrontation in Ukraine would disrupt energy supplies.

Armenia’s defense ministry on Wednesday accused Azerbaijan, which is backed politically and militarily by Turkey, of firing artillery, mortars and small arms in the new attack.

“The situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border remains tense,” it added, reiterating Armenia’s position that Azerbaijan launched an attack on its sovereign territory.

Azerbaijan has accused Armenia, which is in a military alliance with Moscow and has Russian military bases, for firing mortars and artillery at its troops.

“Currently, our positions are frequently attacked,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said. “Our units are taking the necessary countermeasures.”

Reuters could not immediately verify the battleground accounts from either party.
