I picked up a knockoff pair of Hey Dudes at my local Costco last month, bringing my total shoe collection to seven pairs, and a misplaced pair or two of flip flops. I can afford more (thanks for asking and caring) but I’d rather spend my money on anything else if I can help because there are very few things on this earth that I care less about than shoes.
when i saw the trailer for amazon studios Air In the theater I laughed.when i saw the poster Air I scoffed. This is a preconceived bias I brought into the movie when I reluctantly sat down to review it, and while the movie doesn’t take away that shoe ambivalence, I have to say, I really enjoyed it Air.
i feel a little sick Air Because nothing screams the soulless art of corporate sponsorship like an Amazon-made movie about Nike. Not only am I not interested in shoes, but I am also not interested in watching long-form commercials.
but like the movie lego movie We’ve been shown in the past that sometimes long-form commercials masquerading as movies can still be great movies in their own right.it turns out so AirThe story of how Nike signed the legendary Michael Jordan and created the Air Jordan line makes me want to sleep out of context Airas much as I love and appreciate MJ himself (and not just because Space Jam).
The script, penned by Alex Convery, is forceful and sharp, and it does the impossible by making business conversations engaging. The actors who bring it to life (Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Chris Tucker, and Viola Davis, among others) do it in a vivid and convincing manner, Makes you root for them like they’re real little guys and not most, you know, Nike execs.
Ben Affleck is not only a partner but also a director Air, proving once again that he is as good in front of the camera as he is in front of it. However, he did make one choice that adversely affected the movie, which was to have MJ himself have very limited screen time and never showed his face.
The logic behind this decision is sound – while he’s clearly an important character in the story (pun intended), this isn’t a MJ biopic, and we all know what MJ looks like, so showing a picture that’s clearly not him His own face and calling him Michael Jordan might take people out of the illusion of the film — it does give the impression that Jordan doesn’t have much agency in the matter, and that he has very little personality.
It’s an odd choice, as a lot of the Air Jordan line has been considered based on Michael Jordan’s charisma and personality, but in the end this complaint doesn’t make much sense.
for a while Air Made me care about the shoe and couldn’t recommend it better.
Air Available on Amazon Prime.
