A Distinguished Career Aiming to Change Lives as an Ace Communications Professional

Alia Al Mur is a unique Emirati professional whose work in both private and government entities has always had one thing in common – Dubai’s incredible growth and development and transforming people’s lives in the new millennium – which has led her to The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), the guiding force behind the Museum of the Future, opened in February.

Al Mur is a creative man who is DFF Chief Transformation and Partnerships Officer And “lead efforts to manage and develop partnerships with key stakeholders at local and global levels”.

She is also responsible for identifying opportunities and developing processes to create strategies that drive efficiency and return on investment (RoI).

Before assuming her current role, she was Chief Marketing Officer of DFF.

Her impressive academic qualifications – she holds a BA in Communication and Media Sciences and a MA in International Relations and Diplomacy from Zayed University – have helped her establish herself as an outstanding communications professional.

She is also a graduate of the Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Leadership Development (MBRCLD) program, established in 2003 to “develop leaders for tomorrow”.

Al Mur has been fortunate to come into contact with some dynamic Emiratis throughout her illustrious career.

For example, in 2016, she was only the fifth employee to join Smart Dubai, and with the help of her mentor, Dr. Aisha bint Butti bin Bishr, she built a successful career as Director of Marketing and Communications for the newly formed Dubai government entity .

Bin Bishr is Director General of the Smart Dubai Office, which was renamed Digital Dubai last year and is the government entity responsible for Dubai’s digital transformation as envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of Dubai. Ruler of the UAE and Dubai.

Al Mur is credited with building Smart Dubai’s marketing team from the ground up. In addition to leading the rebranding project, she is also responsible for Smart Dubai’s global positioning and brand awareness. She oversees all entity partnerships, speaking opportunities and team positioning for events and products including Dubai Paperless Strategy, Dubai Blockchain Strategy, Dubai’s Ethical AI Toolkit, Smart Workforce and Dubai Cashless Strategy.

She leads Smart Dubai at GITEX and international events and exhibitions, including Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, ​​Spain.

She started her career at a private entity called Emaar Properties and was the only Emirati employee at the iconic Dubai Mall since before its opening in 2008 (the mall opened on 4 November 2008) as Head of Marketing , and was promoted to various leadership positions before she jumped ship to Smart Dubai in 2016.

In 2014, Al Mur was named Employee of the Year by EMAAR.

“I hold the dual role of Head of Events and Marketing at The Dubai Mall and Head of Professional Leasing. I was involved in the opening of The Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa, which included over 600 events and exhibitions,” she said.

Her most notable achievement at EMAAR was bringing an exhibition of international brands to the Dubai Mall. She was the main promoter of the iconic annual event, the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience (VFDE), held for three years in partnership with Vogue Italia.

In retrospect, her crowning achievement at The Dubai Mall was launching the ‘Support Local’ campaign through a partnership with Design 971, a pop-up store offering emerging Emirati fashion designers a premium platform to showcase their collections.

She recalls her “rapid career progression” with fondness.

“While working in Smart Dubai, I led an initiative to create a people-centred government image for the entity. I led the marketing team to build a storyline focused on achievement from a citizen’s perspective. Today, Smart Dubai is recognized as a people-centred Global leader in smart city initiatives. So much so that the United Nations (UN) International Telecommunication Union invited Smart Dubai to co-create global KPIs for the city to identify as a smart city,” she added.

After a candid conversation with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of Dubai Executive Council and Chairman of the Board, Al Mur inspired the creation of DFF for the Hamdan bin Mohammed Student Personal Development Program (HMSPDP) while participating in the MBRCLD programme.

She is also involved in mentoring students and helping them discover talents and skills to aid in their development. With her achievements, such as being selected as one of the ’40 Under 40 UAE Nationals’, it goes without saying that she is a lovely example for the next generation of talented Emiratis who will lead this young nation into the next Top 50.

A heart of Dubai

Al Mur, a native of Dubai at heart, grew up in a large family of eight siblings in the city’s Rashidiya.

During her undergraduate studies at Zayed University, her communication skills shined. In 2005, she started a podcast on diverse topics under the direction of James Piecowye, Associate Professor, Faculty of Communication and Media Sciences, Zayed University, which she ran for several years.

Al Mur has two boys whose birthdays coincide with two important dates in the UAE calendar and history.

The eldest, Mohammed, was born on October 14, 2018 – the day GITEX Global was founded that year – and the youngest, Thani, was born on February 22, the day the Museum of the Future was inaugurated this year. Her husband is Shames Al Hashemi, an entrepreneur and retailer.

Al Mur loves yoga and loves to travel. “Collecting sneakers is one of my hobbies,” she added.
