Uniondale’s Aljamain Sterling successfully defended his UFC bantamweight title with a second-round TKO from TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night to improve his record to 22-3.
This is his second defending title.
He trains for the game on Long Island.Earlier this month, Sterling legal mixed martial arts Prepare for battle in Garden City as he speaks to the Great Long Island.
One of his training partners that day was Mehrab Devalishvili, the third-ranked bantamweight fighter in the division.
“We’re trying to make it very, very tough [on me] — trying to pick up the pace,” Sterling said.
All of that work proved effective in his main game Saturday night.
The main event is the lightweight title belt between Charles Oliveira (33-8) and Islam Makhachev (22-1).
some call it best fight card of the year.
Sterling is Long Island’s third champion. The others are Baldwin’s Chris Weidman (middleweight, 2013-15) and East Meadow’s Matt Serra (welterweight, 2007-08).
