A quick and intense guide to all things race…
Abu Dhabi is by no means a pony when it comes to sporting events, Emirate’s Events Calendar Burst at the girth seam, showing excellence in international competition. But few have captured the imagination and the world’s attention like the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
This year’s F1 weekend from 17-20 November is more than just “cars on the track”. There are post-race concerts, complex, and occasionally not-so-sophisticated but rather wild viewing parties, Michelin-approved elite restaurant pop-ups, and yes, very fast cars on the track, very fast.
These are the best reasons to get excited and book for F1 2022 in Abu Dhabi.
Contest
You probably already realize, but if you’re the kind of person who likes to have fun and pick them to cheer based on the color of the car, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final race of the season. This fact was highlighted in unprecedented drama compared to last year’s race, with Max Verstappen (I think we can fairly say) taking the victory from the mouth of the controversy on the final lap. Away from Lewis Hamilton, a diver’s title is far from eternal glory.
This year’s final in Abu Dhabi is likely to be a victory lap for Verstappen, who has already won 11 races, and it’s entirely possible that he will seal a deal in Singapore on October 2, with a full five races to go until the end of the season . But the winner will never leave the pedal – Hamilton will drop out, while Mercedes is still battling Ferrari for second place in the constructors’ leaderboard. There’s still a lot to decide on that long weekend in November.
Following some major track changes for 2021, designed to provide more overtaking opportunities, a new viewing platform has been added to the track’s north straight. But if you don’t have grandstand tickets, we fear that’s bad news – they’re sold out. There are some general entry options left on the first day of qualifying, but if you want to see the thrilling culmination of a whole year of *incomprehensible car noises*, you need to get one Hospitality Pass.
concert
The Yasalam After Race concert in Abu Dhabi, organized by Flash Entertainment and staged at what is now known as Etihad Park (officially du Arena), is legendary. The eclectic mix of triple-A, off-track talent spewing out in the capital is only after the daily motorsports are over. Yasalam’s “Previous Featured Artists” list reads like a Hall of Fame list – Eminem, Beyoncé, King Leon, Jay-Z Aerosmith, Linkin Park, Prince, Britney Spears, Blur, Rihanna , Paul McCartney, Muse, Post Malone, Weeknd and Stormzy, to name a few.
The only way to see them perform is to hold a ticket to the repertoire for the day the artist performs. You cannot purchase concert tickets individually.
Confirmed artist for Abu Dhabi F1 2022 is EDM Master, Swedish Mafia — Headlines for Friday, November 18th show, members of the show Rap Aristocrat, Kendrick Lamar Take the stage with his contemplative philosophy bar on Saturday 19th November.
It’s still Thursday’s opener, which tends to cater to a younger, trendier audience; and Sunday — the mega-artist, ends the proceedings with a back catalog of long songs. Flash Entertainment loves surprise announcements, so find out when and who will play, always an exciting musical Cluedo game.
Golden Circle passes for each concert are still available for purchase.
Dining room
Every year, along with the capital’s many established permanent culinary seats, F1 brings a number of internationally acclaimed, award-winning restaurant pop-ups. For foodies and even racing fans, the on-board theater on offer is just as exhilarating as the on-track theater, if not more.
This year is no exception. All three big names have had success at the What’s On Awards in 2022 so far. The food partners who have confirmed the Grand Prix are…
This is life
Located on the 54th floor of the Sky View Hotel, this Michelin Guide restaurant not only breaks Instagram for its views of the Burj Khalifa, its menu of international cuisine classics offers a great palate experience. You’ll find a temporary F1 spot on the roof of the Yas Marina Circuit in the Luna Lounge, perfect for that.
Gohan
Offering Japanese-inspired street food, this super-stylish speakeasy inside La Cantine feels like the perfect choice for food grand prix grazing. Expect small pieces of nigiri beyond gyoza on the home straight, high-octane ramen FTW bowls and delicious meat skewers as front-podium treats. Gohan’s new limited-time popup will be found inside the North Stand.
Neville
Finally, to be explored within the existing Shams Suite venue – Ninive is a veritable celebration of Middle Eastern food, a rooftop restaurant and cocktail bar serving epic BBQ fare, mezze, merguez couscous (thank us later), grilled meats skewers and salad. We can’t think of a better ambassador to give the Abu Dhabi F1 culinary team a real local edge.
