The Covid-19 pandemic has a direct impact on the weight of the UAE population, with more than half of the countries gaining weight and causing concern. This shocking fact led to a new wave of epidemic health problems in the community. In turn, Allurion announced its mission to help the UAE to lose weight successfully and safely in the long term.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Within a few weeks, the people of the UAE will go home and seek refuge in place. They think it will be a few weeks, hoping that their sacrifice can stop the spread of the coronavirus. In addition, in October 2020, Stress in AmericaTM 2020 released a report entitled “National Mental Health Crisis”, where the American Psychological Association issued a warning to the world to remind people of the impact of this stressful period on long-term physical and mental health.
It warned that the world will face a second pandemic, which will continue even after the physical threat of the virus is resolved. The Allurion 2021 YouGov survey conducted in April this year shows that this is indeed bearing fruit. Today, weight is the second personal aspect that UAE residents are less satisfied with, second only to their financial situation. It is more worrying than work and interpersonal relationships. Only worrying about the health of yourself and your loved ones will cause greater stress.
The crux of the problem is that the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting blockade have led to dramatic changes in health behavior, prompting people in the UAE to reduce physical exercise and increase their diet. Interestingly, apart from less physical activity, the main reason for weight gain in the UAE is snacking. 53% of UAE residents eat between meals more frequently than before. As a result, 47% of UAE residents now eat more than before the pandemic. The increase in weight gain leads to increased levels of anxiety and disrupts sleep.
Statistics before Covid 19 have further amplified these figures, that is, two-thirds of people in the UAE are already overweight. Obesity has been a major health problem in the UAE for many years, where most of the population is very high. In 2019, Zayed Military Hospital conducted a survey to further increase the severity of the obesity problem, emphasizing that 70% of the UAE male population is obese. In addition, the latest study from the United States found that the prevalence of diabetes in people between 20 and 44 years old is 3.3%. Overall, the UAE ranks highest in diabetes (4.7%) and hypertension, second only to the United States in obesity.
As weight gain and stress go hand in hand, immediate action is required, and Allurion’s world initiative is addressing this much-needed change. No weight loss plan is a panacea, effective plans are based on good medical care and good science. With this in mind, Allurion plans to adopt a holistic approach to lose weight, and more importantly, reduce the risk of diseases due to overweight or obesity, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome.
So far, about 60,000 patients have sought help. Allurion Balloon (formally known as Elipse Gastric Balloon) is a holistic method that does not require surgical insertion or even anesthesia. It is the world’s first technology that allows patients to lose their stomachs within this time frame. On average, they reach 10% to 15% of their body weight, and solve the weight problem after the pandemic, which in turn causes stress.
