Vettel will retire from F1 following this weekend’s race at Yas Marina Circuit, having announced back in July that he was ending his career.
It ended Vettel’s 15-year career in F1, which saw him win four world titles, 53 grands prix and establish himself as one of the series’ all-time greats.
At the height of his success with Red Bull, Vettel often found himself with Alonso and ferrari, The two entered the season finals twice, competing for the championship with each other. Vettel narrowly beat Alonso in 2010 and 2012, giving the Spaniard two world titles.
Ahead of Vettel’s final F1 race in Abu Dhabi, Alonso revealed his special helmet design for the weekend, featuring the German flag stripes that Vettel has been wearing since 2015, and the words ” Danke Seb” information.
“Danke Seb,” Alonso wrote on Instagram as he revealed the helmet design. “Sharing this piece with you one last time, it will be emotional and sad at the same time, but I wish you all the best for your next chapter.”
Alonso and Vettel sat together for the last time at the FIA press conference in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Alonso said it would be “strange” not to have Vettel on the grid next year, but thanked them for their fight over the years.

“Sometimes we fight for the championship, sometimes we fight for Japan’s seventh place. [this year] Obviously we still always enjoy every fight and respect each other as much as possible,” Alonso said.
“I think my career is going to be tied to Sebastian in a way because we’re probably fighting for a lot of things in the best season of our lives.
“Although the result is always on his side, I think it will be very relevant.”
Vettel talks about Alonso in F1 beyond the grid podcast released earlier this week, select outgoing high mountain Drivers are his toughest competitors.
“We fought so hard at the end of the championship, especially in 2010 and 2012,” Vettel said.
“It’s probably still one of my favorite moments to remember, the tense atmosphere of the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix that morning, at least for me. I don’t know the people who were there could have been more relaxed. But for me it was very Nervous. Both of us were nervous.
“As a driver, I think very highly of Fernando. I think he has so much talent, incredible determination, great racing instincts, all of which he hasn’t lost.
“You can still tell he loves racing. He’s very passionate.”
