Amazon Web Services launches new region in UAE

Amazon Web Services (AWS), part of Amazon.com, today announced the availability of its second region in the Middle East, the AWS Middle East (UAE) Region.

Starting today, developers, startups, entrepreneurs and businesses, as well as government, education and non-profit organizations will have more options to run their applications and provide end users with data centers located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Services that use advanced AWS technology will drive innovation, the company said.

AWS plans to invest around US$5 billion (AED20 billion) in the UAE over the next 15 years through the new AWS Middle East (UAE) region, which includes capital expenditures to build data centers, operating expenses related to ongoing utilities and Facility costs, and purchases of goods and services from regional businesses. The investment is estimated to have supported an average of nearly 6,000 jobs annually during this period. The jobs will be part of the UAE’s AWS supply chain, including jobs in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications and the country’s wider economy. It is estimated that the construction and operation of the UAE’s AWS infrastructure will also add approximately US$11 billion (AED41 billion) to the UAE’s GDP over the next 15 years.

The AWS Middle East (UAE) region will also add about $11 billion to the UAE’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the next 15 years, it said.

“AWS is committed to helping customers in the UAE deploy state-of-the-art cloud technologies with the highest levels of security, availability, and resiliency,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, VP of AWS Infrastructure Services.

“With the launch of the AWS Middle East (UAE) Region, we are enabling more customers to harness the power of the cloud to drive innovation across the UAE, while also advancing the UAE by creating jobs, training highly sought-after technical skills and educational resources strategic priorities.”

The enhanced cloud capabilities powered by AWS are expected to generate significant benefits and efficiencies that will drive business success and support the The country realizes major economic interests.”

With the launch of the AWS Middle East (UAE) Region, AWS has 87 Availability Zones in 27 geographic regions and has announced plans to launch an additional 21 Availability Zones and an additional 7 AWS Regions in Australia, Canada, India, Israel, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland. AWS Regions consist of Availability Zones that place infrastructure in different geographic locations.

The AWS Middle East (UAE) Region consists of three Availability Zones and joins the existing AWS Middle East (Bahrain) Region, which opened in July 2019. Availability Zones are far enough apart to support business continuity for customers, but close enough to provide low latency for high-availability applications using multiple Availability Zones.
