More than 1,100 players from 55 countries will take part in the 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, taking part in 11 different tournaments with a total prize pool of AED 300,000.
In the Open, Sultan Ibrahim and Ahmed Farid of the UAE, Mara Havit and Amaf Hamishwari of India tied for the lead with four points.
In the junior tournament with 242 players, 24 players, each with 3.5 points, were tied for the lead at the end of the third round. Notable among these are Yahya Al Kaf and Hamdan Idris of the UAE, Hassan Oryogov of Azerbaijan, Zainab Al Maamari of Uzbekistan, Sindarov Islambek, Mishaal Al Hijab of Kuwait and Rami Talib of Syria, and Domankezi Al Farabi of Kazakhstan.
On Saturday, the first-ever Community Team Championship was attended by 34 community teams living in the country.
At the end of the quick game, the Egyptian community team consisting of Basem Amin, Ali Farhat and Fouad Al Taher had 12 points and the Philippine community team consisting of players Julius de Ramos and Tolentino Rostom had 11.5 points. The Indian Community Team is third, consisting of Abhinav Beni and Anantarianan, with 10.5 points.
The festival kicked off on Sunday with three other events, the Blitz Open with 160 players, the Junior Blitz Championship with 166 players and the Chess Championship with 40 players.
