irish boy band Westlife’s show Thursday night at the Etihad Arena, part of their wild dream tour, was a dream come true for every fan of the 2000s pop band.
Not only was the venue ideal, with very high ceilings, pristine acoustics, air conditioning, and easy parking, but the band also started on time and the energy was so strong that people were already jumping for the second song.
Westlife didn’t wait long to play fan-favorite Billy Joel cover uptown girl, The audience sang along with such a perfect pitch that even the band was amazed.
The band continues to sing old songs, including when you look like that and stupid again plus unexpected version Oh mom! and dancing queen, Make fans ecstatic.
Unsurprisingly, fans at about 80% of the stadium’s capacity soon began dancing to each other, stopping and screaming enthusiastically for about 30 seconds or so when the band asked, “Anyone from Ireland?”
One of the many highlights of the show was the spontaneous appearance of Dian, an Indonesian woman who caught the group’s attention by holding up a sign with a three-item checklist:
1) Fight cancer
2) See Western Life
3) Take a photo with Westlife
Not only did her dream of meeting the band come true, the band members serenaded her and took selfies and short films for her family and friends.
Westlife’s first Abu Dhabi concert means a lot to thousands of fans, like me, who grew up listening to the music on N’Sync and Backstreet Boys in their glory days.
Unlike other musicians who change styles after a long hiatus, the songs on their 2021 album wild dreams, The song the band saved to the end is warm, emotional but upbeat in typical Westlife style, including easy-to-remember and sing lyrics.
Although they stayed out of the spotlight from 2012 to 2018, Westlife’s return to the scene, in fact to the hearts of fans, is a much-needed reprieve in the past two years since the outbreak of the pandemic, especially with Abu Dhabi’s new easing Mask regulations.
