emirates team Add some extra “super” to its superteam status in 2023.

Tad Pogachar Next season will share the team bus with more top talent as the UAE superteam seeks to expand its scoresheet throughout the calendar.

Adam Yates, Tim Wellens and Jay Vine headline Emirates off-season signings as teams gather around Pogačar Tour de France Seeks and wishes to limit its reliance on “cannibal” captains.

2o22: Another Pogačar victory lap – almost

Big wins in 2022:

  • UAE Tour: 1st overall, two stage wins (both Pogačar)
  • Strade Bianche: 1st place (pastry)
  • Paris-Nice: stage win (McNulty)
  • Tirreno-Adriatico: 1st overall, two stage victories (all Pogačar)
  • Volta Catalunya: 3rd, stage winner (both Almeida)
  • Giro d’Italia: Stage victory (Covi)
  • Tour de France: 2nd overall, 3 stage wins (all with Pogačar)
  • Tour of Spain: 3rd, two stage winners (Ayuso, Soler, Molano)
  • GP Montreal: 1st place (Pogačar)
  • Il Lombardia: 1st place (pastry)

Pogačar has picked up a third of Emirates’ victories in 2022 (16 of 48) and contributed its most boastful victory.

Whether in stage races, classics or monumental races, Pogačar leads the team.

The Slovenian’s podium finish from the early UAE Tour all the way through Il Lombardia appears to have single-handedly dragged the Emirates to second in the UCI, behind Jumbo-Visma.

Even without a third consecutive Tour de France win, Pogčar killed the calendar, keeping the white and black UAE jersey in sight all year. Only Remco Evenepoel comes close in terms of hype, headlines and podium time.

But what else is there but Pogačar?

Riders like Brandon McNulty, João Almeida, Marc Soler and teenage prodigy Juan Ayuso all dropped coins into a team trophy kept full by Pogačar’s prowess.

Ayuso’s breakout to third at the Vuelta a España held great promise for the future, while Almeida came close throughout the calendar. But looking at Pogačar, the Emirates didn’t dominate the World Tour winner’s podium in the way it wanted to when it splashed out in the transfer market last winter.

Pogačar dominates the UCI drivers’ standings for 2022, but Jumbo-Visma tops the constructors’ standings. The statistics speak for themselves.

2023: More Climbers, More Skippers

Marquee Transfer 2023:

  • go out: Ray Costa, Fernando Gaviria
  • exist: Adam Yates, Tim Wellens, Felix Grosschatner, Jay Vine, Domen Nowak

This winter, Emirates continued to pump money into its ambitions.

After signing Almeida, Soler and George Bennett last year, the team signed stage racing ace Yates, all-around attacker Wellens, mountain master Wayne and more top climbers this year, achieving Great achievements.

Fading sprinter Fernando Gaviria has been sacked as the team increasingly focuses on its GC ambitions. Veteran captain Rui Costa was also cut after failing to make the tour squad this summer.

Yates will land directly at the heart of the Emirates next month. The 30-year-old is sure to have a week of results and should score some big points with Pogačar on the couch.

Elsewhere, Yates added more momentum to the UAE’s steady Tour contenders. After amassing five Tour top-ten finishes, the Briton will see his chances of co-leading at the Giro d’Italia or Vuelta a España alongside Ayuso, Almeida or McNulty.

And new signings like Wellens, Vine and Felix Großchartner?

The 2023 crop of big climbers adds more high-powered carriages to Pogačar’s Tour de France train, but also brings year-round options to reduce the team’s reliance on its WorldTour top talisman.

“We give new drivers options when joining one of the best teams in the world,” team manager Joxean Fernández told us Velo news“It’s not about getting first, second or third place in the team. It’s about creating the best possible schedule and movement space for all the drivers and then making sure we are competitive throughout the season.

“From the first race to the last race, it’s all about having a balanced squad for the team.”

Jumbo-Visma and the Tour de France Showdown

Pogačar was surrounded by Jumbo-Visma on the tour and did not want to repeat the same mistake.

Emirates hopes to win all year. But it also wants to make a killing.

Pogačar’s quest to return to the Tour de France title will be at the center of his team’s ambitions in 2023.

Next summer’s Tour is poised to see a repeat of the Pogačar-Vingegaard showdown that tore up the Tour this past July as the Slovenian aims for his third. yellow jersey.

“I learned a lot from the Tour. There were some mistakes, some things I could have done differently, some things I could have done better, but nothing catastrophic. Just little things,” Pogačar told world As he reflects on his 2022 disruption.

“In every race you play, there are good things and bad things. In the end, you put it all together and you’re better prepared for the next race. That’s why I believe in 2023, I can Very, very confident and motivated to do better than this year.”

Having drivers like Yates and Vine will give Pogačar more confidence in an already star-studded Tour 8.
