Antoine Fuqua has defended the decision to release “Liberated” after Will Smith’s Oscars blowout.

The 56-year-old filmmaker directed the historical thriller starring Will as a slave named Peter, which opens in theaters and on Apple TV+ next month.

It marks Smith’s first major project since he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards earlier this year after Chris Rock made fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, which Fuqua said The theme of slavery is more important than controversial.

He told Vanity Fair: “Of course I want people to see the film. My conversation is always, ‘Isn’t 400 years of slavery and barbarism more important than a bad moment?’

“We’re in Hollywood, and some really ugly things are happening, and we’re seeing a lot of people get awards for doing some really nasty things.”

Antoine added: “So, I think Apple considered all of these things, we discussed a lot of these things. Then, the people who were in charge of distribution and Apple’s funding made a decision — I appreciate it. I’m really grateful.” gratitude. “

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ director reveals he was taken aback by Will’s slap because he ‘hasn’t met anyone better’

Antoine said: “(The slap) didn’t feel real to me at all because I’ve been with Will for two years and I haven’t met anyone better. I’ll be honest. Very good on set.

“So, I saw a different person than that moment, so my reaction was, when it comes to Will Smith, that particular moment was very foreign to me.

“I can only say a few amazing things about Will Smith, really. You can ask anyone who worked on this movie and they’ll tell you the same thing. The best guy I’ve ever met in my life. “
