I recently arrived in the UAE for the first time on a working visa. I want to know if the company pays for the employee’s health insurance or if I have to contribute to my health insurance. Please guide.

In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Law No. (23) of 2005 on Abu Dhabi Emirate Health Insurance and Implementing Regulations (“ADHIL”) makes it mandatory for employers to provide health insurance for all their employees and their respective family members. This complies with Article 5 of ADHIL, which reads:
Employers shall undertake to provide health insurance for all their employees/workers and their family members, including one employee/worker’s wife and three children under the age of 18. Each sponsor shall undertake to provide coverage for those not covered by the employer it sponsors. Non-UAE nationals are not permitted to obtain residence permits or renewals, nor to be employed, except after enrolling in a health insurance scheme.

In the Emirate of Dubai, Law No. 11 of 2013 on Emirate Health Insurance in Dubai, also known as the Dubai Health Insurance Law No. 11 of 2013 (DHIL) is the main legislation governing compulsory health insurance. Under Article 11 of the DHIL, the “sponsor” of the visa is obliged to provide health insurance for the sponsored person. Article 11 reads as follows:

Based on your enquiry, if you are employed in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, the employer or guarantor (if applicable) is obliged to purchase health insurance for you and you do not need to pay any money or deduct it from your salary.
