Argentine President Fernandez reshuffles his cabinet a week after the crisis. Political news

[ad_1]

The President appointed Juan Manzour, the governor of Tucuman Province, as the head of the cabinet, replacing Santiago Caffero, who was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has reorganized his cabinet, hoping to draw the line in a painful week, because infighting within the ruling Peronist Judicial Party may derail the government alliance.

After a tug-of-war between the more moderate factions and other factions within the government, the reorganization on Friday night resulted in the appointment of new ministers with key roles as the head of the cabinet, the minister of foreign affairs and the minister of agriculture.

Since the fiasco of the mid-primaries last Sunday put the government’s control of Congress in jeopardy, the center-left Fernandez has been fighting the cabinet rebellion of ministers allied with his party’s far-left.

The divided but powerful Vice President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner lashed out at what she said was the mistakes made by the government, exacerbating tensions between the moderates surrounding President Fernandez and the former president’s own supporters.

In a statement late Friday, the office of the president stated that the regional governor Juan Manzour will take over as the head of the cabinet, replacing Santiago Caffero, who will become the foreign minister.

Julian Dominguez was appointed as the head of the agricultural investment portfolio. Argentina is the world’s largest exporter of processed soybean meal and soybean oil, as well as the world’s main supplier of corn, wheat, barley and beef.

There is no mention of changes in the Ministry of Economy, led by the moderate economist Martin Guzman, who has been the key to the country’s recent debt restructuring and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

The appointment of the Ministry of Security, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the new press secretary has also changed.

The government stated that the new minister will be sworn in at the Casa Rosada presidential palace on Monday.

Election crackdown

The election crackdown put the party between two paths: deepening populist policies to alleviate the situation of hard-hit Argentines, or adopting a more moderate approach to attract middle-class voters who support conservative opposition.

On Wednesday, several ministers, including the Minister of the Interior, submitted their resignations to Fernandez.

On Thursday night, both the President and Fernandez de Kirchner launched an offensive. In an open letter, she called for the reorganization of various ministries and commissions and slammed the lack of public spending.

She wrote: “I sincerely believe that the President will not only restart the government with the power and conviction to face the pandemic, but will also sit down with the Minister of Economy to check the budget figures.”

The president said on Twitter that he will be the one who decides the future of the government.

“The administration of the government will continue to develop in the way I think is appropriate. For that, I was elected,” he said
