When heading to the Arkansas Repertory Theater at 601 Main Street in Little Rock, expect them to take their show to the next level because they are, after all, The Rep. GUYS & DOLLS, a Broadway staple running through Dec. 31 The show is loved by the entire theater world. There’s a lot of pressure to bring a classic of this merit to the stage when people don’t expect perfection. However, I dare say this production is definitely next level. So much so that I declare it Broadway-caliber.
with music and lyrics Frank Lowther and book joe swelling and Abel BurrowsGUYS & DOLLS is based on damon runyon, a hobby of gambling. Musical Follows Gambler Nathan DetroitCarlos Lopez) and Sky Masterson (Christian McQueen) chase a game of dice, and their lady is interested in Sergeant Sarah Brown (Kim Onah) and Miss Adelaide (stephanie gibson). The show produced multiple Catchy musical tracks like “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” my favorite “Tinhorns’ Fugue,” and the popular “Luck Be a Lady,” which has always is one of Frank SinatraThe main songs in his repertoire over the years. bob force It has been reported that GUYS & DOLLS is “the greatest American musical of all time,” and the public seems to have agreed on that since the Broadway musical won Tony Awards in 1951 and 1992 (which I saw in New York).
When you walk into the theater, the sets grab your attention immediately. very beautiful! There are signs hanging from the ceiling, a newsstand stage to the right, they utilize a higher platform, and center stage in the air (well, not really in the air) is a wonderful band led by the music director michael rice, is entertaining throughout the show. Sometimes, they’re just as funny as the characters.
Now, let’s talk about this amazing cast!Choreographer and Choreographer Gustavo Zajak, The Rep brought some visiting artists who really graced the Broadway stage.mine My friend and I are deciding whether Carlos Lopez more like danny devito or Mel BrooksAlthough we compromise and say it’s a mix of the two, there’s no denying how good he’s been as Nathan Detroit. His chemistry with the heroine stephanie gibson (Miss Adelaide) is lovely. Watching them make out is as good as watching them fight. Their duet “Sue Me” is an engrossing collaborative moment that lets you choose sides – you’ll never guess who I agree with (you get him, girl!). Ms. Gibson is so much fun. Her interpretation of Miss Adelaide is cheeky and makes me roll every time she takes the stage. Suave and charismatic, Christian McQueen (Sky Masterson) owns any space he commands. Sarah Brown He never had a chance to chase her. Also, Kim Onah’s firm demeanor shows that she’s a very serious missionary, but gets soft when she gets gossiped by Sky.
It is said that there are plenty of local talents, and they couldn’t be more right. P. Jay Clark as Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Ben Grimes as Benny Southstreet had me giggling throughout the scene. They’re the perfect comedic duo, and even though they don’t perform as well as the other dancers, I love them. Kevin Alan Brown as Rusty Charlie, Frederick Webb, Jr. as Harry the Horse, David Weatherly (David Weatherly) plays Big Jule (Big Jule).chasing gamblers but never quite catching them Grant Allen Watkins As Lieutenant Brannigan, and support Sgt. Brown is lovely Glen J. Gilbert as Arvide Abernathy, asking for Kathryn A. Pryor as General Matilda B Cartwright.
When it comes to choreography, the troupe has so many tricks that I don’t know which dancer to look at. The Havana hit featured dance leader Camila Cardona and had the ensemble dancing Cuban-style. Likewise, The Crap Shooters’ dancing is wild and visually exciting. The Hot Box figures are so cute, Especially the dazzling costumes designed by Stacey Herrison and her crew. “Take Back Your Mink” transforms the dolls from elegant formal attire to jazz club showgirl attire on stage. The uniforms of the missionaries stand in stark contrast to the bold colors of the gamblers and dancers.
The production numbers wouldn’t be so forgiving without an incredible ensemble that shimmers and rocks throughout the show. Members include Brian Earles, Brianna East, Hannah FairmanHannah Hill, Louisa Moz, Augustine Nguyen, Arnie RodriguezMolly Rosenthal, Brad Weatherford, Ethan Patrick and Caroline Perry.
R. Christopher Maxwell, Stage Production Manager, Kelli Cool and Kelsey Pulzone, Assistant Stage Managers, Michael Riha, Set Designer, and Lighting Designer perform behind-the-scenes theatrical magic Matthew Webband sound designer Cavett Luke Mitchell.
