OSCODA — The 38th Annual Beach Art Show was held June 25-26 at Oscoda Beach Park, with food vendors on the basketball court just north of arts and crafts vendors.
There were 55 suppliers in attendance, many returning from previous shows. Products include maple syrup, spices, sausages, nuts, fragrances, jewelry, hats, clothing, fashion accessories, stained glass, lawn, house and garden decorations, furniture, paintings, note cards, books, and more.
Suppliers as far away as Lancaster, Ohio, including from Oscoda, East Tawas, Hale, Whitmore, Harrisville, Fairgrove, Grand Blanc, and Grand Ledge participants.
“We had a steady stream of visitors both days,” said Gaylynn Brenoel, co-chair of the beach arts at the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event each year. “It was very warm, sunny and not too windy.”
When one of the exhibitors stumbled in the parking lot with a broken jaw, fellow exhibitor and EMT Jason Lott, along with Chamber staff, reached out to her. After a quick trip to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital for tinkering, she returned to her booth to end the day.
Throughout the weekend, American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) members Judy Kotarak, Annette Dennis, Stephanie Mallak Olson, Judy Biggers, Kris Hanson and Joanne LeTourneau offered free tickets to win a lime green kayak donated by the Northland Area Federal Credit Union.
“The credit union is proud to be participating in this event by donating kayaks,” said Kris Hanson, Northland Business Development Officer and ABWA member.
“I’m delighted to be asked by ABWA to draw the winning ticket from a large bag of entries,” said co-chair Brenor, “when the winner turned out to be Jason Lott who helped our injured exhibitor before!”
Brenoel also reported that 25 of the artists and craftsmen donated one of their artworks to the Oscoda VFW for auction to two local Marine Corps veterans who lost theirs in a fire in June. Domestic dogs, their house and all their belongings. “We are fortunate to have such a great exhibitor community,” she said. “Some of the suppliers have signed up for next year. My husband Mick and I just saw smiles as people came and went from the beach.”
On Sunday afternoon, Art on the Beach attendees also received three winning entries from Oscoda’s “Take Flight” artist competition, which were installed on foundations along the boardwalk by volunteers from the Economic Improvement Council’s Art and Placemaking Subcommittee. The Pedestal, part of the larger Oscoda Art Walk, now features 21 works on pedestals throughout the downtown area.
Art on the Beach was co-hosted by Chamber of Commerce board members Gaylynn Brenoel and Vicki Hopcroft, who agreed to attend the event a few weeks before the event.
“We owe our success to Gaylynn,” Hopcroft said. “She knows how to be grounded, organized, mediate conflict with grace and wit, and effortlessly keep things running smoothly and happily. We are fortunate to have her lead.”
After July 4th, the Chamber will begin planning for the Paul Bunyan Festival at Fuerto Stadium from September 16th to 18th. Subcommittee chair Lain MacKenzie said the outdoor Take Flight art exhibit would continue as long as the weather permits. The indoor Take Flight art exhibit will be on view at Huron Shores Artisan Hall through August 22nd.The lobby is located at 112 N.
