ABU DHABI, 18th August, 2022 (WAM) — The Tour de España, the final of three Grand Tour races this season, starts tomorrow as the eyes of the world turn to the Emirates to end a stellar year Brilliant performance at one of the highlight events of the motorsport calendar.
The race itself started with a 23.3km time trial in Utrecht before heading to Spain. Across 21 stages, most of the route consists of 7 mountain stages, 6 flat stages and 4 hill stages. In addition to this, teams will face two flat stages, including a high-altitude final, a team time trial and an individual time trial.
Riders will initially face several fast and flat stages where sprinters will seek to make their mark. Pascal Ackermann will lead the Emirates Chiefs’ charge on the pitch, having enjoyed a stellar performance in the Tour de France after winning Stage 4.
With the race transitioning into the mountains midway through the first week, climbers will be taking their place and looking to grab an early march of their competitors in the general classification. The UAE team will be led by Portuguese genius Joao Almeida, who has been successful in 2022.
Almeida will have a superb victory on the Queen stage of the Vuelta Burgos, heading into the Vuelta a España, where he overtook his opponent in the embers of the game before closing out with an iconic kick to impress Impressive stage win. After finishing second in the general classification, Almeida and the UAE team will be hoping he can continue where he left off on Sunday 11 September and take advantage of his good form to sit in Madrid for the award on stage.
Before the race, Almeida said: “This is my first Tour de France and I’m excited to start. At the Vuelta Burgos, it ended on a high note, which gave a huge boost to the confidence to win on the final day. I feel like I rode myself to that race. I feel good again on the bike and with a strong team I think we can do some really good things in this race. Hard to say what’s going to happen What, but I think the goal will become clearer as the game goes on. It will be a long road from Utrecht to Madrid, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge.
The match will also see Juan Ayuso make his first major tour of his career, representing the UAE team. As the youngest rider in the race, Ayuso hopes he can make an impact on global cycling in his home country. The 19-year-old Spanish starlet will take to the field following an impressive maiden career win at Circuit De Gexto. Following the victory, it was announced that Ayuso had committed his future to the Emirates Emirates and signed a long-term contract until 2028.
