The United States will send up to 8.5 million additional doses of coronavirus vaccine to Mexico as the two countries continue to work hard to cope with the surge in infections caused by the highly contagious Delta variant.

On Tuesday, the day after the phone call with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, President Andres Manuel López Obrador stated that he expected most of the people living on the U.S. border Adults will receive a second dose of vaccine within one month.

He said that both he and Harris agreed on the importance of reopening the land borders that had been closed since March 2020.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard (Marcelo Ebrard) stated that the United States will provide Mexico with 3.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the drug maker Moderna, and up to 5 million doses of AstraZeneca (AstraZeneca). ) vaccine.

The above comments come as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new travel warnings to Israel, France, Thailand, Iceland and several other countries as the number of infections of the Delta variant continues to surge.

Mexico has seen a steady rise in cases in recent weeks, with more than 6,500 new infections reported on Monday, but health experts say the actual number may be much higher.

Several states in the U.S. Try to control The recent surge has been called the “unvaccinated pandemic” by top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci.

The country currently has an average of more than 120,000 new coronavirus cases per day. This rate has doubled in recent weeks and is comparable to the level before the vaccine was provided in the country. Currently, approximately 60% of eligible Americans have been fully vaccinated.

The increase in infections and slow vaccination rates have prompted President Joe Biden to increasingly urge state and local governments to put pressure on residents to vaccinate them.

Biden has previously announced regulations requiring federal workers to be vaccinated or undergo routine coronavirus testing.

Monday, the Pentagon Announce It will require all active military personnel to be vaccinated by mid-September.

Washington has also become the latest state to require most state employees to be vaccinated or face the risk of unemployment.

‘Amazing numbers’

US officials said that seven states, including Florida, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi, had disproportionate numbers of infections in the country.

In Texas, Dallas and Houston, the two largest school districts in the state, announced that students and faculty and staff are required to wear masks, ignoring the emergency order implemented by Governor Greg Abbott, prohibiting county and local government entities from requesting Wear a mask and maintain social distancing to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

Nevertheless, on Monday Abbott appealed to outside the state to help fight the third wave of infections in the state, which prompted the county hospital Harris Health System and Houston Lyndon Johnson Hospital to set up tents to accommodate the overflow of their COVID-19 patients.

Abbott directed the Texas Department of Health Services to use a staffing agency to find additional medical staff from outside the state. He also wrote to the Texas Hospital Association asking the hospital to voluntarily postpone all elective medical procedures.

In neighboring Arkansas, state health officials reported on Monday that hospital admissions have increased the most in a single day since the pandemic began.

On Monday, the number of hospitalizations in the state increased by 103 people, bringing the total to 1,376.

The state’s health department reported that as of Monday, there were only eight intensive care unit beds in the state.

“Today’s report shows some very amazing numbers,” Governor Asa Hutchinson said in a tweet.

Only about 37% of the state’s population has received a comprehensive virus vaccine.
