To meet the high demand for cancer screening and treatment, the UAE Aster Hospital opened its first mature oncology department at its branch in Al Qusais, Dubai on Monday.
Aster said the new center provides highly specialized cancer care with a focus on multidisciplinary treatment, adding that it can also provide all types of insurance, including low-level insurance.
The department can handle approximately eight chemotherapy patients at a time. Currently, it will focus on internal medicine and surgical oncology.
The inauguration was hosted by Alisha Moopen, Deputy Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare; and Mamta Mohandas, an Indian actress and cancer survivor.
“Early detection of cancer is very important to ensure optimal treatment results. It is necessary to introduce technological advances and raise awareness of better and more cost-effective treatment options,” said Dr. Sherbaz Bichu, CEO of Aster Hospital and Clinics in the UAE.
As part of the new department, the hospital also introduced the “Tumor Committee.” It is composed of a group of doctors and other healthcare providers from different professions, who will meet regularly to discuss cancer cases and share their knowledge.
The oncology department will be led by Dr. Pranay Taori, a specialist oncologist, Dr. Sivaprakash Rathanaswamy, a consultant surgical oncologist, and oncology committee members from all over the world.
Moopen said: “With the establishment of the oncology department, the UAE Aster Hospital is strengthening its ability to provide professional care and existing specialized services to the people of the UAE.”
“Recent studies have shown that the incidence of cancer among young people in the UAE is five times that of the United States and the United Kingdom. The incidence of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and leukemia remains alarmingly high. We sincerely believe that the multidisciplinary approach introduced by Aster Hospitals will prove very beneficial to patients in the UAE,” she added.
The Aster Oncology Center of Aster Hospital will provide treatment for various cancers, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer, leukemia and other common and rare cancers.
It offers various treatments, from hormonal therapy to immunotherapy, and chemotherapy.
